Stark County high school football Week 6 recaps: McKinley, Canton South among winners

Week 6 of the high school football season in the Stark County area saw McKinley stay perfect in the Federal League, Canton South stay perfect overall and Northwest continue its winning streak. Green also won a thriller and Perry's Christian Ivanic had a memorable night at Louisville.

MCKINLEY 37, HOOVER 28

NORTH CANTON — Keaton Rode threw for three touchdowns and made a game-sealing 39-yard field goal as the Bulldogs won at Memorial Stadium.

After Hoover rallied from a 28-14 deficit to tie the score, McKinley (5-1, 3-0) went back on top with 7:47 left in the fourth quarter on Nino Hill’s 2-yard touchdown run. Rode added the field goal with 1:42 left to put the game away and run McKinley’s winning streak to four games.

Rode completed 13 of 19 passes for 162 yards and no interceptions. Stephon Thomas ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and caught a TD pass. Keith Quincy and Dayor Ferguson also snagged TDs from Rode, with Quincy grabbing an interception on defense. Hill added 61 yards on eight carries.

Hoover’s Mason Ashby returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and caught 10 passes for 109 yards and a TD. Zach Braucher added six catches for 60 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (3-3, 0-2).

Carson Dyrlund completed 21 of 32 passes for 211 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Green football rallies to Federal League win

GREEN 31, GLENOAK 28

GREEN — The Bulldogs blocked a field goal as time expired to preserve a comeback win at home in Federal League action.

Green trailed by as much as 21-3 in the first half. The Bulldogs were within 28-23 with 1:54 left in the third after Jorden Beyl scored on a 1-yard run.

GlenOak maintained that lead much of the fourth quarter before Green’s Zach Baglia caught a 7-yard TD pass from Tyson Hunka with 1:19 left in the game. Hunka then tossed an underhand pass to convert the 2-point conversion and give Green the 31-28 lead.

Hunka completed 14 of 21 passes for 115 and added 81 yards rushing on 19 carries. Beyl rushed for 55 yards on 14 carries.

Baglia caught four passes for 31 yards, while Anthony Manderine added three catches for 64 yards.

Jamar Johnson ran 31 times for 228 yards and two touchdowns for GlenOak (2-4, 1-2).

Christian Ivanic runs wild in Perry win at Louisville

PERRY 49, LOUISVILLE 6

LOUISVILLE — Christian Ivanic ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries as the visiting Panthers snapped a two-game skid in emphatic fashion.

Ivanic ripped off TD runs of 59 and 62 yards for Perry (3-3). Panthers QB Austin Mattox ran for a touchdown and threw a 91-yard touchdown pass to Kyson Walker.

Vann Riordan recovered a fumble in the end zone for a Perry defense that also got interceptions from Ivanic and Kaleb Lawhun.

Cam Dougherty’s 8-yard TD run was the lone score for Louisville (1-5).

Northwest football wins 4th straight

NORTHWEST 28, TUSLAW 12

LAWRENCE TWP. — A balanced attacked helped Northwest (4-2, 3-0) win its fourth straight game by pulling away from Tuslaw (2-4, 0-3) in a PAC-7 game.

Connor Satterfield and Parker Kraft each ran for a score, while Tyler Pappas threw two TD passes. Tristan Pennington and Chase Badger caught the touchdowns passes. Also, Logan Allman blocked two Tuslaw kicks.

Big first quarter powers West Branch football to EBC win

WEST BRANCH 70, MINERVA 0

MINERVA — West Branch took advantage of five Minerva turnovers in the first quarter alone and rolled to an Eastern Buckeye Conference win.

Beau Alazaus threw all four of his touchdowns in the first quarter for the Warriors (6-0, 1-0), who led 49-0 at the end of the quarter. He finished 9-of-10 for 129 yards before he gave way to backups Jeremiah Thomas and Charlie Biskup.

Joey Jackson caught two TD passes and Boston Mulinix ran for two scores for West Branch. Kicker Eliza Hurst tied a school record with 10 extra points.

Minerva (0-6, 0-1) has lost 24 straight games.

Jared Witherow throws five touchdown passes in Hornets win

MALVERN 49, STRASBURG 6

STRASBURG — Jared Witherow threw five touchdown passes to power the Hornets past the Tigers in the Inter-Valley Conference North Division opener for both teams.

One half of Witherow’s completions were touchdown passes. He finished 10-of-13 for 238 yards and no interceptions.

Malvern’s Rodney Smith caught four passes for 145 yards and three TDs. One of Smith’s touchdowns was an 87-yard completion.

Aiden Sprague and Josh Untch also caught touchdown passes for the Hornets (5-1, 1-0), who finished with 391 total yards. Drake Hutchison ran for a score.

The Malvern defense intercepted four passes and recovered a fumble.

CANTON SOUTH 35, MANCHESTER 14

FRANKLIN TWP. — A 95-yard TD pass by Poochie Snyder in the fourth quarter highlighted a strong final quarter by the unbeaten Wildcats, who pulled away for a PAC-7 road win. No other details were available.

MENTOR LAKE CATHOLIC 37, CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC 20

MENTOR — Central Catholic’s three-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of powerful Lake Catholic. The Crusaders fall to 3-3, while the Cougars improve to 5-1. No details were available.

ROOTSTOWN 37, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 6

LOUISVILLE — The Rovers scored all 37 of their points in the first half in winning the Portage Trail Conference opener for each team. No other details were available. Rootstown improved to 6-0 overall this season. Aquinas is 0-6. the Knights have lost 22 straight games.

ORRVILLE 38, FAIRLESS 28

ORRVILLE — The Falcons fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the PAC-7. No details were available.

CARROLLTON 41, MARLINGTON 35, OT

CARROLLTON — The Dukes dropped their EBC opener in overtime at Carrollton. No details were available.

NEWCOMERSTOWN 46, EAST CANTON 7

NEWCOMERSTOWN — The Hornets lost their IVC North opener in falling to 1-5 overall. Newcomerstown improved to 4-2. No details were available.
