Star Power: Check out the Softball All-Area teams in Bucks County area for spring 2023
This spring was quite the season for many of the Courier Times/Intelligencer's softball teams! Teams won district and league championships, made deep runs in the state playoffs, and even won a state championship. And it was all due to the incredibly talented student-athletes who stepped up to the plate time and time again. These are some of the players who hit it out of the park this season.
Player of the Year:
Julia Shearer, North Penn, senior
All-Area First Team:
Karley Teman, Palisades, pitcher: Teman followed a fantastic freshman campaign with a sensational sophomore season. In 159 innings, Teman allowed just 88 hits and 34 earned runs, finishing with a 1.50 ERA and a 24-2 record. During that span, she reached an incredible 284 strikeouts and threw three complete-game no-hitters. In the PIAA 3A quarterfinals, she gave up three hits, one walk and a lone run to earn the win. At the plate, she batted .471 with 40 hits, 22 RBIs, seven doubles and three home runs.
Abbey Wagner, Quakertown, pitcher: Replacing a longtime ace is never easy, but Wagner sure made it look like it was. The junior, taking over for all-state pitcher Syd Andrews, started the season with three straight shutouts. She finished with a 1.33 ERA, giving up 81 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 153 batters over 116 innings, leading the Panthers to an undefeated 20-0 regular season.
Lexi Waring, Council Rock South, pitcher: The sophomore was incredible in the regular season, recording a miniscule 0.85 ERA while striking out 152 in 82 innings, which included a complete-game no-hitter against rival CR North. Her work in the postseason, though was even more impressive – in two district playoff games, Waring gave up a total of four hits, four walks and one run while striking out 17 through 13 innings.
Ashley Amato, Palisades, catcher: The Pirates’ lone senior and a team captain, Amato had the best season of her career as she helped the Pirates to the PIAA Class 3A semifinals. She had 43 hits and posted a .457 batting average while driving in 27 runs and scoring 26. Amato had 12 doubles and she hit her lone home run of the season in the PIAA playoffs against Conwell-Egan, where she went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Pirates to the win.
Ava Storlazzi, Pennsbury, infielder: With the Falcons losing much of last year’s starting lineup to graduation, it was up to the new veterans, such as Storlazzi, to step up. The junior did just that, leading the Falcons in nearly every offensive stat, including hits (31), runs scored (27), average (.443) and stolen bases. In addition to giving the Falcons’ golden glove defense at second base, Storlazzi was a perfect 27-for-27 in stolen base attempts.
Maura Yoos, Archbishop Wood, infielder: The Vikings’ leadoff hitter was the ideal stage-setter. She had a hit in 21 of 23 games this season, with multiple hits in 17 games. For the season, the junior hit .589 with 49 hits, 17 stolen bases and 39 runs scored. She also drove in 14 runs and hit five doubles and four triples. In the PIAA 4A playoffs, Yoos went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Vikings to a 7-4 first-round win. She was named first-team All-Catholic.
Averi Dockery, Pennridge, infielder: The sophomore had a breakout season, smashing 12 home runs, 10 doubles and two triples for the Rams while splitting time between shortstop and pitcher. She had a team-high 40 RBIs while batting .425. In the circle, she recorded a 2.28 ERA and struck out 135 batters in 80 innings.
Brie Wilmot, North Penn, infielder: The Shippensburg commit drove in 33 runs while playing stellar defense at first base to help the Knights to a state championship. Wilmot, who had four home runs, had seven RBIs during the District One and PIAA Class 6A playoffs.
Katey Brennan, Conwell-Egan, outfielder: The senior Seton Hall commit can – and does – make plenty of highlight-reel worthy catches in centerfield, but her power at the plate scared opponents even more. Brennan drew more than 20 walks – several intentional – but still managed to bat .681 and drive in 21 runs. She hit a three-run homer in the PCL semifinals, and crushed a two-run home run, her fourth in as many games, to help secure the Eagles’ first Catholic League championship since 2007. Brennan was named first-team All-Catholic and was the league's Position Player of the Year.
Tess Kearney, Hatboro-Horsham, outfielder: After a slow start, the Hatters won nine straight to secure a playoff spot, and Kearney was a major contributor to that winning streak, batting .530 with five doubles, three home runs, two triples, 19 RBIs and 16 runs scored during the span. For the season, she hit .495 with nine doubles and four home runs, and drove in 32 runs. The senior West Chester commit had 40 hits and scored 28 runs for the Hatters in addition to her standout defense in centerfield.
Alyssa Wiley, Upper Moreland, outfielder: Watching Wiley cover ground in centerfield, you’d never know she had ankle surgery after a serious injury at the end of her sophomore year. Wiley, in addition to being a standout on defense, also powered the team’s offense, hitting .569 with four doubles, two triples and two home runs and drove in 26 runs. The senior scored 28 runs, drew eight walks and was 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts. She led the team in nearly every offensive category, including batting average, slugging, on-base percentage, RBIs, hits, runs scored and stolen bases.
Leah Schwalm, Quakertown, designated hitter: The Panthers averaged 10 runs per game, and their sophomore designated hitter was a key contributor, driving in nearly two runs each game. Schwalm finished with a team-high 35 RBIs on 34 hits, including five home runs, five doubles and two triples; she scored 25 runs and batted .567 for the season.
Sarah Sabocsik, North Penn, senior, utility: The senior was a force at the plate, batting .436 with 34 hits and 29 RBIs for the state champion Knights. Half of her hits went for extra bases, with nine doubles, six home runs and two triples, and she scored 27 runs. She had a pair of home runs in the Knights’ district playoff quarterfinal win against Ridley.
Dakota Fanelli, Archbishop Wood, utility: The Arcadia University commit was named MVP and Pitcher of the Year in the Philadelphia Catholic League as she led the Vikings to the PCL semifinals and PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals. In the circle, she had a 2.43 ERA and struck out 202 batters, breaking the team’s single season strikeout record of 162 – which she had set herself last season. At the plate, she led the Vikings with 30 RBIs, 10 doubles and five triples
