St. Mary Catholic advances to boys soccer state championship game with goal in second overtime

MILWAUKEE − Braeden Brenn’s goal in the second overtime lifted St. Mary Catholic to a 1-0 victory over Washburn/Bayfield in a WIAA Division 4 boys soccer state semifinal game Friday.

With the win, the top-seeded Zephyrs (21-1) advance to Saturday’s state championship game against Shoreland Lutheran at 7 p.m. at Uihlein Soccer Park. Shoreland Lutheran advanced with a 1-0 victory over Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran in the other semifinal.

St. Mary Catholic had a 29-3 advantage in shots but couldn’t punch one into the net during 80 minutes of regulation or the first 10 minutes of overtime.

Finally at the 95:39 mark in the second overtime, Brenn scored an unassisted goal when he slotted in a rebound of a cross.

Kieran Barrientos had six shots on goal and Brenn had four shots on goal for SMC, which has allowed only eight goals all season.

Hunter Schreiber made one save in goal for St. Mary Catholic. Louie Sonday had 13 saves for Washburn/Bayfield, which finished the season with a 15-1-2 record as the No. 4 seed.

St. Mary Catholic is making its third appearance at the WIAA state tournament. The Zephyrs finished as runner-up in 2004 and lost in the semifinals in 2005.

Washburn/Bayfield was playing at state for the first time in program history.
