St. Joseph wrestling and football star Jimmy Mullen announces his college choice

Two-time New Jersey heavyweight wrestling champion Jimmy Mullen is headed to Virginia Tech. He'll play football there too.

The St. Joseph senior announced his commitment Saturday night on Instagram.

Mullen, who became the first freshman to win a New Jersey heavyweight title back in 2019, is also one of best football players in the state. He was a preseason All-New Jersey selection at defensive end.

"I'm blown away by all the amazing schools and wrestling/football programs that have recruited me, but at the end of the day there was only one logical choice; it just feels right, I will be continuing my academic and athletic career playing football and wrestling for the Hokies at Virginia Tech," he wrote.

Virginia Tech has a storied football program and a lot of recent success in wrestling. In 2019, Bound Brook native Mekhi Lewis became the Hokies' first national champion in wrestling.
