St. Anthony boys at the top of the latest Associated Press rankings; Altamont, St. Anthony girls both in the Class 1A polls

Jan. 16—Several area boys and girls basketball teams earned a spot in the latest Associated Press rankings, voted on by media members throughout the state.

Below is where each team falls in their respective classes.

BOYS

Class 1A

St. Anthony is the No. 1 team in Class 1A. The Bulldogs are 16-4 and 5-0 in the National Trail Conference. St. Anthony has won its last five games and play at Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor (WSS) Friday night and host Class 2A St. Joseph-Ogden on Saturday at the Enlow Center. The Bulldogs received 11 first-place votes.

As for the rest of Class 1A, Tuscola is No. 2 and earned one first-place vote. The Warriors are 16-2.

Glasford (Illini Bluffs) is ranked third, Aurora (Christian) is ranked fourth, Goreville is ranked fifth and received one first-place vote, Pecatonica is sixth, Winchester/Bluffs is seventh, Lexington is eighth, Serena is ninth and Scales Mound is 10th. Camp Point (Central), Waltonville, Griggsville-Perry, South Beloit, Mounds (Meridian), Chicago (Manley) and Hardin (Calhoun) were all honorable mentions.

Class 2A

Teutopolis is an honorable mention in Class 2A. The Wooden Shoes are 12-6, with its most recent defeat coming to Tuscola on Saturday at J.H. Griffin Gym.

T-Town's lone game this week is Saturday when it hosts Fairbury (Prairie Central). The Wooden Shoes were scheduled to play at Danville Tuesday night, but that contest was canceled.

As for the rest of Class 2A, Breese (Central) is the No. 1 team, Peoria (Manual) is second, Tolono (Unity) is third, Byton fourth, El Paso-Gridley fifth, Beecher sixth, Benton seventh, Chicago (Christ the King) eighth, Chicago (Phillips) ninth and Taylor Ridge (Rockridge) 10th.

St. Joseph-Ogden, Clinton, Pinckneyville, Tremont, Manlius (Bureau Valley), Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin, Minonk (Fieldcrest), Columbia, Rockford (Christian), Murphysboro, Peoria (Notre Dame), Trenton (Wesclin), Bellville (Althoff Catholic), Metropolis (Massac County), Macomb and Lawrenceville joined the Shoes as honorable mentions.

GIRLS

Class 1A

Both St. Anthony and Altamont made the cut in the rankings for Class 1A.

The Bulldogs are tied for eighth, while the Lady Indians are fifth.

St. Anthony is currently 16-6 and 4-1 in the National Trail Conference. Altamont is 19-2 and 7-0 in the league. The Lady Indians received one first-place vote.

As for the rest of Class 1A, Galena is ranked first and had five first-place votes, Orangeville is second with two first-place votes, Annawan is third, Tuscola is fourth with one first-place vote, Okawville is sixth, Pecatonica is seventh, Glasford (Illini Bluffs) is tied with the Bulldogs for eighth and Freeport (Aquin) is 10th.

Peoria Heights, Serena, Hardin (Calhoun), Catlin (Salt Fork), Kewanee (Wethersfield), Elmwood, Abingdon-Avon, Goreville, Brownstown/St. Elmo, Des Plaines (Willows Academy) and Glen Carbon (Father McGivney) were all honorable mentions.

Class 2A

Teutopolis is an honorable mention in Class 2A.

The Lady Shoes are 13-8 and are currently playing in the 37th Annual Apex Network Physical Therapy Highland Girls Basketball Tournament. T-Town lost to Taylorville on Saturday and played Belleville (East) on Tuesday.

As for the rest of Class 2A, Breese (Central) is ranked first. Breese (Mater Dei) is second. Both teams received two first-place votes.

Peoria (Notre Dame) is ranked third with five first-place votes. Rock Island (Alleman) is fourth with one first-place vote. Nashville and Mackinaw (Deer Creek) are tied for fifth. Petersburg (PORTA) is ranked seventh. Camp Point (Central)/Augusta (Southeastern) is ranked eighth. Watseka is ninth and Carlyle is 10th.

Kankakee (Bishop McNamara), Canton, Staunton, Coal City, Chicago (DePaul College Prep) and Stillman Valley joined the Lady Shoes as honorable mentions.

Class 3A

Effingham is ranked No. 10 in Class 3A.

The Flaming Hearts are 18-4 and are competing in the Vandalia Mid-Winter Tournament. Effingham defeated Salem's junior varsity team on Monday.

As for the rest of Class 3A, Lincoln is the unanimous No. 1 team with seven first-place votes. Peoria is second, Quincy (Notre Dame) is third, Morton is fourth, Galesburg is fifth, Lombard (Montini) is sixth, Bethalto (Civic Memorial) is seventh, Rockford (Boylan Catholic) is eighth and Washington is ninth.

Mt. Zion, Taylorville, Mattoon, Peoria (Richwoods), Chicago (Hyde Park), Mt. Vernon and Chicago (Noble/Butler) were all honorable mentions.
