St. Anthony boys remain at the top of the latest Associated Press rankings; Effingham girls ranked 10th in Class 3A

Jan. 19—Several area boys and girls basketball teams earned a spot in the latest Associated Press rankings, voted on by media members throughout the state.

Below is where each team falls in their respective classes.

BOYS

Class 1A

St. Anthony is the No. 1 team in Class 1A. The Bulldogs are 17-4 and 5-0 in the National Trail Conference. St. Anthony has won its last six games. The Bulldogs played Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor (WSS) last night and host St. Joseph-Ogden at the Enlow Center today. St. Anthony received 12 first-place votes.

As for the rest of Class 1A, Tuscola is No. 2 and earned two first-place votes. Goreville is third, Glasford (Illini Bluffs) is fourth, Winchester/Biggsville (West Central) is fifth, Pecatonica is sixth, Aurora (Christian) is seventh, Serena is eighth, Lexington is ninth and Chicago (Manley), Camp Point (Central) and Scales Mound are all tied for 10th.

Mounds (Meridian), South Beloit, Waltonville and Casey-Westfield all received votes.

Class 2A

Teutopolis is an honorable mention in Class 2A. The Wooden Shoes are 12-6, with its most recent defeat coming to Tuscola on Saturday at J.H. Griffin Gym.

T-Town's lone game this week is today when it hosts Fairbury (Prairie Central). The Wooden Shoes were scheduled to play at Danville Tuesday night, but that contest was canceled.

As for the rest of Class 2A, Breese (Central) is ranked first and received 10 first-place votes, Tolono (Unity) is second and received two first-place votes, Peoria (Manual) is third and received two first-place votes, Byron is fourth, El Paso-Gridley is fifth, Beecher is sixth and received one first-place vote, Benton is seventh, Chicago (Christ the King) is eighth, Taylor Ridge (Rockridge) is ninth and Chicago (Phillips) is 10th.

Like the Shoes, Clinton, Pinckneyville, Minonk (Fieldcrest), Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin, St. Joseph-Ogden, Trenton (Wesclin), Columbia, Peoria (Notre Dame), Macomb and Belleville (Althoff Catholic) also received votes.

GIRLS

Class 1A

Altamont is the No. 4 team in Class 1A. The Lady Indians are 21-2 and 7-0 in the National Trail Conference. Altamont has won 19 successive games. The Lady Indians play St. Anthony for the National Trail Conference Tournament championship tonight.

As for the rest of Class 1A, Galena is No. 1 and earned six first-place votes, Orangeville is No. 2 and earned three first-place votes, Annawan is third, Okawville is fifth, Glasford (Illini) Bluffs is sixth, Tuscola is seventh, Freeport (Aquin) is eighth, Pecatonica is ninth and Serena is 10th.

St. Anthony received votes, along with Kewanee (Wethersfield), Catlin (Salt Fork), Goreville, Brownstown/St. Elmo, Peoria Heights and Abingdon-Avon.

Class 2A

Teutopolis received votes in Class 2A. The Lady Shoes are 15-7, with its most recent victories coming against Belleville (East) and Waterloo in the

37th Annual Apex Network Physical Therapy Highland Girls Basketball Tournament.

T-Town plays Bethalto (Civic Memorial) for the consolation championship of the tournament today.

As for the rest of Class 2A, Peoria (Notre Dame) is ranked first and received eight first-place votes, Breese (Central) is second and received three first-place votes, Breese (Mater Dei) is third and received one first-place vote, Nashville is fourth, Rock Island (Alleman) is fifth, Mackinaw (Deer Creek) is sixth, Petersburg (PORTA) is seventh, Camp Point (Central)/Augusta (Southeastern) is eighth, Watseka is ninth and Carlyle is 10th.

Like the Lady Shoes, Stillman Valley, Coal City, Staunton, Canton, Kankakee (Bishop McNamara) and Chicago (DePaul College Prep) also received votes.

Class 3A

Effingham is the No. 10 team in Class 3A. The Flaming Hearts are 19-4 and 3-3 in the Apollo Conference. Effingham plays in the championship game of the Vandalia Mid-Winter Tournament today.

As for the rest of Class 3A, Lincoln is No. 1 with nine first-place votes, Peoria is second, Galesburg is third, Quincy (Notre Dame) is fourth, Washington is fifth, Morton is sixth, Lombard (Montini) is seventh, Rockford (Boylan Catholic) is eighth and Behtalto (Civic Memorial) is ninth.

Mt. Zion, Mt. Vernon, Taylorville, Chicago (Noble/Butler), Peoria (Richwoods), Dixon, and Chicago (Hyde Park) all received votes.

The next voting cycle ends on Wednesday, with the votes processed in the afternoon.
