Sports scores, highlights: Durfee boys tennis stuns Weymouth in first round matchup
The spring high school season playoff season is underway for Fall River area teams.
Here's a look at scores and highlights from Wednesday's action:
Boys Tennis: Durfee 3, Weymouth 2
LOCATION: Weymouth
DATE: May 31
RECORD: Durfee, 10-9
HIGHLIGHTS: In a back-and-forth slugfest between the 34th seed Durfee boys tennis team and the host 31st seed Weymouth, it was sophomore third singles player Colin Fleet who would decide the Division I preliminary match. With the match tied at 2-2, Fleet found himself down to Kyle Crowley, 1-4, in the first set, only to rally to win five straight games to steal the set, 6-4. Then in a near deja vu of the first set, Fleet trailed trailing once again in the second set, 0-3, only to win six out of the last seven games to nail down the second set, which sealed the victory for the Hilltoppers. It was the second straight season, Durfee has won its opening round of the tournament since not winning for two decades. Also leading the charge for the Hilltoppers were both doubles squads. At first doubles, sophomores Xavier Inacio and Chrispin Sokol easily took care of business, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. The veteran tandem of Tim Archambault and Jesse Tamba, also won in dominant fashion, 6-3, 6-0. “I was really proud of the way our young guys stepped up today," Durfee head coach Jared Polisher said. "Four out of our starting seven guys are sophomores, so today I think they just graduated into being upperclassmen. The future of Durfee boys tennis is looking bright the next few years.”
