Sporticast: Roger Goodell’s New Contract, NBA’s Highest-Paid Players

On the latest Sporticast episode, hosts Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams discuss some of the biggest sports business stories of the week, including Roger Goodell’s new three-year extension. The NFL commissioner is now under contract through March 2027.

The pair talk about Goodell’s legacy as commissioner, a tenure that began in 2006. League revenue has nearly tripled to $20 billion in that span, with franchise valuations also growing dramatically. They also talk about the league’s priorities in the next few years, including new stadiums, international growth and updated ownership bylaws.

NFL owners met in New York City last week and approved at least one major change to the league’s ownership rules. The debt limit for existing owners was raised to $700 million from $600 million, which means that new franchise buyers can now utilize $1.2 billion of debt, up from $1.1 billion. This was a topic of debate during the recent sale of the Washington Commanders, and is likely the first of multiple changes the NFL will undergo to make buying a team slightly easier, even for the world’s richest people.

Next they discuss Sportico‘s recent list of the NBA’s highest-paid players. LeBron James ($128 million) tops the chart, followed by Steph Curry ($102 million), Giannis Antetokounmpo ($91 million), Kevin Durant ($88 million) and Klay Thompson ($64 million). The hosts talk about how these players are approaching their off-court earnings, and how the ratio of salary to off-court income may change in the future.

Lastly, they talk about Andre Iguodala, who is retiring from the NBA to focus on his venture capital firm Mosaic General Partnership, and wrap things up with a discussion of the MLB playoffs.
