Spencerport, Haverling, Fillmore advance to New York state girls soccer finals

A state title is on the line Sunday for Spencerport, Haverling and Fillmore.

Section V qualified five teams for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Soccer Championships tournament, but only those three moved on to their respective state finals.

Spencerport defeated Section I Somers 3-1 in the Class AA semifinal. Class B's Haverling beat Section III's Marcellus 2-1 in overtime. Fillmore defeated Section X's Lisbon 4-1.

What it means

Spencerport coach Jamie Schneider's Rangers improved to 21-0-0. They'll play in their first state final since finishing as runners-up in 2019.

Haverling coach Braedyn Northrup's Rams are now 19-1-0. They lost in last year's 2022 Class B final.

Fillmore coach Jon Beardsley's Eagles are 21-0-0. They'll play for the program's first NYS title Sunday.

Fairport coach Tom Natalie's Red Raiders (7-9-2) lost to Section IX's Monroe-Woodbury 1-0 on a first half penalty kick from Kate Allen. Holley coach Renee Wolf's Hawks (19-4-0) lost their semifinal 3-0 to Section II's Waterford-Halfmoon.

Top players

Class AA

Emma Watson, Lindsay Lenhard and Emily Peacock each scored in Spencerport's win. Cate Burns' defense allowed its first goal since Oct. 9, but her 19 shutouts are still tied for the Section V record with one game remaining. The Rangers allowed three goals all season.

Class B

Keegan Smith scored both Haverling goals. Her second was the game-winner in overtime.

Class D

Hope Russell scored twice for Fillmore, pushing her season total to 71. She's the third girl in NYS history to eclipse 70 goals. Grace Russell and Mylee Miller each scored a goal for the Eagles.

What's next

The NYSPHSAA championship games will take place Sunday.

In Class B, Haverling battles Section XI's Babylon at 9:30 a.m. at Cortland High School.

Spencerport will play Smithtown West of Section XI in the Class AA final at 10 a.m. at Tompkins Cortland Community College.

The Class D final features Fillmore and Section III's Cincinnatus at 12:30 p.m. at Homer High School.
