Southwest Georgia goes 'lights out' in regional championship against Georgia Christian

Nov. 6—DASHER — Friday was the first chilly night of football for the Georgia Christian Generals, just in time for their region championship game against Southwest Georgia Academy. Unfortunately, the game was cut short when half of the Generals' field lights failed twice before the end of the first quarter with Southwest Georgia Academy in the lead.

The first interruption happened with a little more than 10 minutes left in the first quarter, which resulted in a 20-30-minute delay. The second was at the end of the first quarter, to which the game ended. From the onset, SGA held the advantage, scoring four times in ten minutes.

Southwest Georgia Academy started the game at their 38 yard line, baiting the Generals into two offside penalties. Their drive ended with a pass into the end zone for the first touchdown of the game. Failing the extra point, the Southwest Georgia Warriors started the game 6-0 with 11:07 left in the first quarter.

The ball would soon be back with the Warriors due to an interception thrown by the Generals early into their first drive. The interception put Southwest on the Generals' 35-yard line, where, on the next play, they scored through a halfback counter. The lights then went out for about 20-30 minutes. After the lights turned back on, a successful two-point conversion made the score 14-0 with 10:01 left in the first quarter.

The Generals were unable to make first down, and a bad punt would result in the Warriors starting at Georgia Christians' 45-yard line. On the next play, Southwest ran it into the end zone for another touchdown and extra point, making the score 21-0 with 8:02 left in the first.

On their third series of the game, Georgia Christian started a drive, which resulted in their first first down of the game with a run by Carson Hanks to the 48-yard line. Ultimately, they stalled and were forced to punt.

Starting at their 40-yard line, the Warriors would employ another halfback counter to run it into the end zone, making the game 28-0 after a successful extra point with 3:48 left in the first.

The Generals' final drive of the game would net them another first down through a facemask by the Warriors. A pass to James Frazier for 13 yards would get to the 30-yard line, where the first quarter would end. The lights then shut off once again, and the game was called.

Southwest Georgia Academy was named the GIAA AA Region 3 champions. Georgia Christian ends their regular season 1-9.
