THURSDAY

Volleyball

Canterbury 3, Barron Collier 2

Going into this season, there were high hopes and expectations for both the Canterbury and Barron Collier volleyball programs. Both sides knew how good the other was, but Barron Collier entered Thursday night as a clear road favorite.

However, the home side was simply better where it mattered and when it mattered.

Canterbury knocked off the area’s top squad entering this season, winning 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13 in front of a raucous crowd at the Murphy Sports Center.

The Canterbury School girls volleyball team hosted Barron Collier Thursday, August 24, 2023 for an early season matchup of two of the top regional teams.

“I’m incredibly proud of this group,” Canterbury coach Charlie Castillo said. “They have been fighting for these moments and this opportunity since we started preseason. They were excited to have the opportunity to play a team that’s so talented like Barron Collier. I just can’t really describe how happy I am and how proud I am of this group.”

Canterbury exploited Barron Collier’s serve receive for much of the night, while on the other side, Barron committed 17 service errors, forcing themselves to play from behind early on in each of the five sets played. Addison Piatt had a lot to do with that, as she posted 19 kills, 19 digs, and 4 aces, extending rallies which turned into points. As a team, Canterbury posted 13 aces on Barron.

“This game was more than volleyball,” Piatt said. “This was our team stepping up, really playing together, and for each other. That’s why I think we pulled it out. It was more than just playing great. We all wanted to win for each other.

The Canterbury School girls volleyball team hosted Barron Collier Thursday, August 24, 2023 for an early season matchup of two of the top regional teams.

“We wanted to serve aggressive and be precise on our first contact. If you have good first contact, it usually helps you win games. We practiced a lot on defense and serving.”

More often than not Thursday night, Barron looked like a team still trying to gel, especially with Aisha Keric, Sofia Locadia, and Miriam Weintraub all being newcomers to the program in different capacities.

Miscommunications among players were frequent more often than not on the floor, adding to the many mistakes Barron made Thursday night, a few of which were in costly moments. And despite all of that, Barron nearly walked away with a five-set win on the road, showing the potential and promise the Cougars can have down the stretch once the team puts everything together and is in sync with each other.

Up front, Barron had 12 blocks result in points, led by Keric, who had four. Weintraub and Kendra Pruitt had three apiece, while Locadia had two. Keric led Barron with 16 kills, while Weintraub added seven. Locadia, Pruitt, and Ava Zehnder had five kills apiece.

North Florida commit Madison Hammermeister was virtually a non-factor in the first two sets, posting two kills. Hammermeister turned it on down the stretch, finishing with eight kills. Olivia Hoy and Charlotte Laquis both had seven, while Brighten Sedmack added six. Molly Dunn’s 26 assists were a team-high, with Sofia Vergara adding 16 assists.

“That’s one of the things I’m most proud of,” Castillo added. “We’re not dependent on one player. Obviously, Madi didn’t have her best night tonight, but the way that the team rallied and seeing other players step up like Addi Piatt or Remy Foos, those are critical components with building a complete team and building something that’s capable of doing special things.”

Canterbury (2-0) will get right back to work next week, taking on Estero and Community School before playing in the Nike Tournament of Champions. Barron Collier will get time to digest Thursday’s loss, taking on Aubrey Rogers on Tuesday before playing Palmetto Ridge a week from now.

TUESDAY

Volleyball

Seacrest Country Day 3, Bishop Verot 0

One down, 31 more to go.

With a Seacrest team looking to become just the second volleyball program in Southwest Florida to win back-to-back-to-back state titles, the program knows it has a long way to go if they want to hoist a trophy in Winter Haven three months from now.

The Stingrays weren’t remotely close to playing a perfect game on Tuesday, but their dominance in the second half of sets was noteworthy, which led to a sweep of Bishop Verot, 25-15, 25-13, 25-19. With the win, Seacrest extended their streak to 55 consecutive sets won against local competition dating back to Oct. 6, 2021.

“Credit to Bishop Verot,” Seacrest coach Jeff Motluck said. “I think they’ve got a very nice group there. I think they should be proud of how they played. Our girls stepped up tonight. I think one thing we talked about tonight was controlling the things that we can control, and coming out with intensity from the beginning of each set. If we make a couple errors, we have to bounce back and correct them. They did a really good job of that tonight. They came out and competed. They played a really nice match.”

Seacrest’s strength in the second half of sets was evident in the first and third sets specifically, when it closed on respective runs of 9-3 and 10-2. In the third set, the Stingrays trailed 17-15 to Verot. That was the only time Motluck used a timeout in the match.

Verot’s energy matched Seacrest in portions of the contest, fueled in large part by Kerrigan Habing and Maddie Knaak. Habing was Verot’s spark in moments, finishing with a team-high nine kills, while Knaak finished with five. Verot tallied six aces on the night, taking advantage of a place where Seacrest has traditionally been strong at. In just two of their 30 games last season did a team post six or more aces against the Stingrays.

“I think sometimes we look at the bigger picture of the match, when we need to be focusing on the little details,” Motluck said. “We stress technique a lot, and paying attention to the discipline and that kind of stuff. We had to refocus our attention to making sure we were paying attention to the little details, like holding our platform on serve receive. We made those little adjustments and bounced back.”

Nova Southeastern commit Brooke Spurgeon and Sami Soderlund were dominant for Seacrest, as the duo posted 10 and 11 kills, respectively. Milena Lopez averaged just under 10 assists per set, finishing with 29 on the night. FGCU commit Alexa Haley added 13 digs in the winning effort.

“It’s really good to get in season,” Spurgeon said. “We’ve been excited about it since last season ended. I think we have high hopes and we’re very excited about what’s to come. This team has my heart, we all have each other’s heart, and we can’t wait to get going.”

Spurgeon and the rest of the team know that a target is on their backs, especially having gone 52-8 over the last two seasons with a pair of state championships to show for it. Seacrest expects to get everyone’s best game this season, which should help them in the long run with every game that goes by.

“With everything we do, we focus on what we can control on our side of the court. Throughout the last two seasons, it’s brought us closer. We rely on each other, and we control what we can control.”

In the losing effort for the Vikings, Marissa Peck posted a pair of aces, while Diana Ahkmetova and Ella Portu had three and two kills, respectively. Portu had two blocks up front, while Knaak added a third.

Seacrest (1-0) gets back in action on Thursday at home against SFCA (2-0), while Verot (0-1) will head into the Sunshine State Athletic Association volleyball tournament this weekend in Winter Haven looking to get into the win column.
