Southern New England Golden Gloves set to run four shows

FALL RIVER — The clock is getting turned back on the Southern New England Golden Gloves.

The annual amateur boxing tournament, staged at the Fall River Police Athletic League Hall, 31 Franklin St., is scheduled to run four shows this winter, starting this Saturday.

The SNEGG has, in recent memory, run for three consecutive Saturdays each winter. But the number of entries this year has not only justified but necessitated a bump to four weeks.

“I can't remember the last time we had to do four weeks,” longtime SNEGG promoter Paul Morrissette said.

The SNEGG, back in its heyday, ran for as many as five weeks at the now long-gone Lincoln Park Ballroom. It would be four straight Thursdays — a week off for the Bishop's Ball — and then the final Thursday show where most of the champions would be crowned.

As the boxer numbers dwindled, the SEGG reduced its run to three weeks, where it's held for recent memory.

Fall River boxing clubs are very much helping to fuel the resurgence. There are four stables in the Spindle City —Love's Boxing and Fitness, Stay Ready Boxing & Fitness, Bernardo's Boxing, and host Fall River PAL — and those four are providing 20 of the approximately 80 SNEGG entries for 2024. Bernardo's alone has nine entries.

The number of boxers/bouts has also been boosted, Morrissette noted, by his inclusion of the sub-novice division. SNEGG, Morrissette noted, is the only one of the nearby regional Golden Gloves tourneys staging sub-novice bouts. Those bouts have been well received by the PAL crowds in recent years. A sub-novice boxer has not previously competed in a USA Boxing-sanctioned match.
