South Dakota high school football scores and schedule: Aug. 19

The first week of the high school football season got going Friday, and the highlight was a 9AA clash between No. 1 Howard and No. 4 Hanson, with the Tigers hanging on for a 20-12 win over the Beavers.

Taiden Hoyer had an 8-yard touchdown run and 20-yard touchdown pass to Atticus Darnell, while Karsyn Feldhaus also found the endzone as Howard built a 20-0 lead in the first half. They did not score in the second half, but their defense made the lead stand, surviving a Jayce Slaba to Ethan Cheeseman first half touchdown and a 71-yard Jackson Jarding to Hadley Wallace touchdown in the third.

It was the 13th win in a row for the Tigers.

Canistota 43, Irene-Wakonda 28 - Tage Ortman threw for 137 yards and two touchdowns and Noah Kleinsasser rushed for 114 yards and two scores to lead Canistota to the win. Dashel Spurrell had 131 yards and two touchdowns rushing for Irene-Wakonda.

Winner 48, Tri-Valley 12 - Riley Orel had 10 carries and scored touchdowns on four of them, totaling 131 yards on the ground in the win.

Parkston 36, Kimball/White Lake 8 - The Trojans outgained KWL 302-101, with Brayden Jervik, Luke Bormann, Jesse NEwton and Kalen Weber all rushing for touchdowns. Weber added 80 yards and a score through the air.

Nathan Mohnen had a 6-yard touchdown run for KWL.

Mount Vernon-Plankinton 37, Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 8 - Reed Rush threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 94 yards to lead MVP.

Rapid City Christian 36, Lead/Deadwood 30 (3OT) - Simon Kieffer found Elijah Hoyt in the back of the end zone for the game-winning 5-yard touchdown in the third extra frame, as the Comets won a marathon classic in the season opener.

Alcester-Hudson 48, Centerville 8 - Mateo Kleinhans rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another 114 yards and a score in the win. Cole Edberg threw for 182 yards and a touchdown for Centerville. Kleinhans also had 10.5 tackles and an interception. Owen Bovill intercepted two passes. Dominic Egdom had 100 yards and a touchdown receiving.

Viborg-Hurley 54, Sunshine Bible Academy 0 - Brady Schroedermeier completed 5-of-6 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns in the win, while Luke Campbell rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Freeman/Freeman Academy/Marion 34, Burke 12 - Riley Tschetter completed 15-of-28 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns in the win, while Maddox Kihne rushed for 64 yards and a score. Rocky Ammann had 111 yards and a touchdown receiving.

Elk Point-Jefferson 50, Parker 0 - EPJ outgained the Pheasants 472-47 in their win, getting 170 yards and three touchdowns on the ground from Lucas Hueser, and 156 yards and two touchdowns through the air from Noah McDermott. Devon Schmitz rushed for 93 yards and a score while catching three balls for 51 yards and two touchdowns.

Britton-Hecla 44, Great Plains Lutheran 34 - BoDell Davidson threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 143 yards and two scores in the win. Thomas Erickson rushed for 136 yards and four touchdowns for GPL.

Sioux Valley 34, Jim River 14 - Brock Christopherson rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns for the Cossacks, while Jace Christensen was 6-of-8 passing for 100 yards with two touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown.

Deuel 14, Clark/Willow Lake 0 - Owen Quail rushed for 54 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

McCook Central/Montrose 20, Flandreau 7 - Boston Katzer threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars, while Paul Parsley passed for 191 yards and a score for the Fliers.
