Sophomore trio and more: Field hockey players to watch on Cape Cod

The field hockey success on Cape Cod is arguably one of the best in the state.

Out of the 11 teams, nine currently have a playoff spot in the latest MIAA power rankings. Sandwich (10-0) and Monomoy (8-0-1) stand as the only unbeaten Cape teams, but the other seven teams have had success in their own ways as well. Falmouth, Nantucket and Dennis-Yarmouth are ranked top 10 in their respective divisions, while St. John Paul II sits at No. 11.

Here are the players that have led their teams to success so far, and will do so the rest of the season:

VOTE: Four goals: Vote for the Storm Works Roofing High School Field Hockey Player of the Week

Megan Garthee, Barnstable

Sophomore Garthee has been overlooked in recent years, being in the shadow of her older sister Alexa (28 points last season), but she is now a player to watch. The midfielder has strong stick skills and game sense.

"She continually stops teams from transitioning past the 50, is always in the right spot for a pass and is super fast," Barnstable head coach Caitlyn Sweeney said. "Her confidence has started growing, giving her the power to make multiple assists and score this season."

Ally McEneaney, Barnstable

The senior forward is following up a season where she finished with 35 points (21 goals and 15 assists) in her first season of playing field hockey. So far this season, she has 11 goals and seven assists.

"She looks to support her teammates and is overall an incredible athlete," Sweeney said.

Egan is a junior defense and midfielder who was a league all-star last season.

"Chloe will turn over the ball in the defensive circle and transition it all the way up the field to the forwards on her own. She is a brick wall on free hits and comes out of nowhere to support her teammates when in trouble on the field," Sweeney said.

Avery Johnsen, Falmouth

"She is a dynamic defender with amazing reactions and reach," Martha's Vineyard head coach Rebecca Nutton said. "She is a confident anchor to our defense and excels at 1 vs 1s, shutting down fast breaks with a cool, decisive tackle. Her off-season workouts and club participation for the last two years has had a huge impact on her growth as a player."

There is another sophomore and Cape and Islands all-star on this list with defensive back Cotter. She was a starter last season as a freshman.

"She is one of my three very solid backs this season and involved in all defensive corners. Abby is a very hard worker, and she has been so consistent on defense all season," Beaton said.

Samantha Orcutt, Sturgis
