Sophia Gorriaran of Moses Brown wins Girls Athlete of the Year at All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards

Sophia Gorriaran of the Moses Brown School won Girls Athlete of the Year last week at the All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards, presented by BlueCross & BlueShield of Rhode Island.

Other finalists were Kylie Eaton of Moses Brown and Alex Mega of East Greenwich High School

A reluctant superstar, Gorriaran leaves Rhode Island as one of the most accomplished track athletes the state has ever seen. She saved her best season for her last, winning a state cross country title to go along with a bevy of gold medals in the indoor and outdoor track seasons after winning races she didn’t have to run.

Gorriaran is a unique athlete, one the state may never see again at this level, but we will see plenty of her going forward. She’ll start at Harvard in the fall and if her progress continues, there’s plenty of reason to think the Olympics won’t be far behind.

The All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards are part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards program, the largest of its kind in the nation with regional shows and now a national show later this summer.
