Sooners fall to Hokies in game 2 14-8, will play deciding game 3 tomorrow
After shocking the No. 4 team in the nation in game one, the Sooners learned just how good the Virginia Tech Hokies are in Saturday’s 14-8 loss. The Sooners and Hokies will play a game three tomorrow at noon to decide who will move on to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Hokies shelled Oklahoma pitching all game long.
David Sandlin had issues with his command and was tagged with five earned runs and gave up three home runs to Virginia Tech’s lineup. After Sandlin was pulled, Oklahoma used six more pitchers. Only one of them, Javier Ramos, threw more than one inning.
Errors again plagued the Sooners. Tech scored three unearned runs while OU committed three errors in the field. The Hokies are good enough of a team on their own. If the Sooners want to punch their ticket to Omaha, they can’t give these teams any help like they did today.
After his heroics in game one, Kendall Pettis had a nice day, going one for three with a walk and yet another RBI in this Super Regional.
The Sooners threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases and bringing in three runs, but ultimately, Virginia Tech’s lead was just too wide to overcome.
To finish off this upset, the starting pitching needs to be better than what David Sandlin showed today. Other than Trevin Michael, who has been phenomenal in this tournament, the bullpen has struggled. Presumably Cade Horton will get the start for Oklahoma and the Sooners will need him to go longer than the 3.2 innings Sandlin did today.
