Softball Player of the Week: Rutgers Prep’s Julia Opong-Marfo wins Week 6 honors

It’s been a season of learning for the Rutgers Prep School softball team. The Argonauts did return a few key varsity players, but there are also girls learning to play for the first time and the win-loss results have been inconsistent.

But Rutgers Prep put a nice run together last week, and center fielder Julia Opong-Marfo had a big hand in the success, as the team followed up a 1-7 skid with two wins over public-school programs. The junior went 6-for-9 in the victories over Montgomery and Carteret, adding a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.

She’s entered the week hitting .342 for the season with two longballs, 11 runs and six RBIs.

“Julia is an incredibly hard worker. In the world of high school softball that’s dominated by club and travel players, Julia is an example where hard work can bring about success,” Rutgers Prep coach Matt Moore said. “No hitting coaches or club team, just a kid that shows up early and leaves late.

“She turned herself into a good bunter, her speed puts pressure on the defense, and she covers a ton of ground in the outfield. She can also hit with power and keeps the defense honest. Most of all she’s a great teammate and wonderful kid.”
