Softball: Coldwater splits two at Cardinal Invitational; Union City falls to Athens

COLDWATER - The Coldwater Cardinal varsity softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the Cardinal Invitational, defeating Garden City while dropping a heartbreaker to Grandville.

Game one saw the Cardinals use a lights out effort on the mound from Mackenzie Searing to defeat Garden City 3-1. Searing took the win on the mound after throwing six and two-thirds innings while allowing only a single run. Searing gave up three walks and struck out four in the win.

Maren DeBeau secured the save on the mound, facing a single batter in the last inning.

Coldwater scored all three of their runs in the third inning and saw Garden City score their lone run in the top of the sixth as the Cardinals out hit Garden City 8-2.

DeBeau led the Coldwater offense with two hits, including a double, while Coley Burkhardt, Mya Porter, Searing, Maddie Moore, Izzy Angevine, and Brooklyn Closson all added hits. Moore recorded a double while Burkhardt smacked a triple.

Searing, Moore, and Angevine all had RBIs in the victory.

Game two of the tournament saw Grandville score four runs in the fourth inning, which made all the difference, as the Cardinals fell 5-2. Grandville out hit Coldwater 10-7 in the finale.

Mya Porter took the loss on the mound after throwing five innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, only one earned, with five walks and eight strikeouts.

Burkhardt led the Cardinal offense with a single and a double with an RBI and a run scored while DeBeau added a pair of singles. Porter, Moore, and Angevine all had singles for Coldwater while Moore added an RBI.

Coldwater is now 9-14 on the season and will return to Interstate 8 conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Jackson Northwest.

Union City falls to Athens in non-conference clash

ATHENS – Two former Big 8 conference rivals faced off for a single game on Saturday, with Athens defeating Union City 4-3.

Union City led 2-1 after two innings but a three run third pushed Athens lead to 4-2. Union City made some noise in the final inning, scoring a single run, but it was not enough as the Chargers fell 4-3.

Karlie Eagen took the loss on the mound for Union City after throwing all four innings, allowing six hits and four runs with two walks and one strikeout.

Emily DeLisle led the Union City offense with a double and an RBI while Cali Wilkinson, Madison Krummrey, and Hannah Schofield all added singles. Wilkinson and Schofield both had RBIs in the tough loss.

Union City is now 4-17 on the season and will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Quincy.
