Sleepy Eye to host 2024 governor's pheasant opener

Oct. 24—SLEEPY EYE — Gov. Tim Walz announced that Sleepy Eye will host the 2024 Minnesota Governor's Pheasant Hunting Opener on Oct. 11-12.

"After a strong kickoff to this year's pheasant hunting season, I'm already looking forward to our time in Sleepy Eye and for the community to carry on the tradition of a fantastic opener next year," Walz stated in a news release.

The Sleepy Eye Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau submitted an application on behalf of the community to host the 2024 opener.

"Sleepy Eye, Brown County and its area sporting and wildlife organizations have a strong history of collaborating together, so we are confident this event will be another great opportunity to showcase our southern Minnesota hospitality, habitat and hunting" stated Christina Andres, Sleepy Eye Chamber of Commerce executive director, in the release.

Sleepy Eye has a population of 3,428 and is at the junction of U.S. Highway 14 and Minnesota Highway 4.

The 2024 event will be the 12th annual Governor's Pheasant Hunting Opener. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Explore Minnesota will assist local partners in planning the event.

The governor's pheasant opener was last held in this region in 2015 when it was hosted by Mankato. Madelia hosted in 2013. Owatonna hosted this year's opener about two weeks ago.
