Signing Mark Sanchez would be step back for Bears

Last night, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Bears will be hosting free agent quarterback Mark Sanchez on Thursday. This news comes a few weeks after Chicago spent big money on fellow quarterback Mike Glennon. If they plan on signing Sanchez, I have just one question for them.

Why?

Sanchez isn’t as bad as people say he is, but it would be foolish to sign another quarterback in free agency. It should be a priority this offseason to find a quarterback in the draft who can develop into a starter. Chicago can’t afford to settle for a backup who will be 31 this year.

You already know what you’re getting with Sanchez; he doesn’t have any more potential to tap into. Drafting a rookie has a much higher upside. Even if the Bears choose not to pick a quarterback in the first two rounds, someone like Brad Kaaya or Nathan Peterman could at least develop into a starter with time.

Glennon’s contract basically states that he is only guaranteed one year with the team. This would give the Bears the perfect opportunity to draft a signal-caller and have him sit the 2017 under Glennon. By signing Sanchez, they would likely be holding off selecting a quarterback for another year, which is something they can’t afford to do.

The only way that signing Sanchez would work is if Chicago kept him on as a third-string quarterback. Having him and a rookie behind Glennon would provide solid depth. However, given his reputation, that likely will not be the case. Plus, Connor Shaw, who missed all of 2016 with a horrific leg injury, has more upside as a backup than Sanchez does.

Sanchez gets a lot more flak than he deserves, that much is true. He’s not great, but he’s a serviceable backup in today’s NFL. However, the Bears shouldn’t go after him at the expense of drafting a quarterback.
