Shurmur bounces Haden from Browns practice

Cornerback Joe Haden was kicked out of practice by Browns head coach Pat Shurmur for rough play during the Browns' final public training camp workout Wednesday.

Haden tackled wide receiver Travis Benjamin in the end zone following Benjamin's touchdown catch.

"I want all of our guys to make it to the horse race," Shurmur said, referring to the regular season. "Safety - everything I do I think about these players and this team. I told them that. All my thoughts revolve around our players and our team. I think it's very important that we practice fast and we're smart."

Shurmur told reporters they'd have to find out the details on Twitter, a veiled reference to team president Mike Holmgren's then-public comments to WTAM radio that Haden was removed from the field for being too rough.

"That's between me and the player. I've got a great deal of respect for Joe," Shurmur said. "My only apology is that I used bad language, and the fans were here to see it. That's between me and the player. Joe is a great competitor and I appreciate what he does and who he is. That's the last you will hear me talk about it."

Shurmur said the incident was unrelated to Haden's potential four-game suspension for use of an illegal substance.

Linebacker D'Qwell Jackson said the incident was heated and that both parties "went a little overboard," in comments made to reporters coming off the practice field.
