Sharks set to buy out D Martin's contract

The San Jose Sharks have placed defenseman Paul Martin on unconditional waivers with the intention of buying out his contract.

Martin, 37, joined the Sharks as a free agent in 2015 and has one year remaining on his contract at $4.25 million. He was limited to 14 games last regular season because of both injury and his play.

"Paul Martin has been the utmost professional on and off the ice during his three years in San Jose," general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement Friday. "His leadership, character and on-ice contributions have been essential to our success and in reaching the 2016 Stanley Cup Final. The impact he has had on our organization, his teammates and many of our younger players will be felt for many years to come."

Originally drafted in the second round by the New Jersey Devils in 2000, Martin has 50 goals and 270 assists in 870 career games.
