Setting the scene for upcoming weekend of Section 4 football

Here, a table-setter for the upcoming weekend of Section 4 football – including a matchup of seven-time state champions:

Corning at Vestal, 7 p.m. Friday

Vestal has rationed opponents 8.4 points per game on the way to a 4-1 record, that setback dealt by Union-Endicott. The Golden Bears’ final home game of the regular season will be followed by visits to Horseheads and Binghamton.

Corning (2-3) has had its challenges defensively, but has put up 28 or more points in all but its season-opening loss at Cicero-North Syracuse. The Hawks were 28-14 winners last weekend over Union-Endicott, with Clayton Smith’s 104 rushing yards leading.

Vestal quarterback Cam Schaffer threw two touchdown passes in a 27-0 win over Elmira in football Oct. 6, 2023 at Elmira High School.

Horseheads at Union-Endicott, 7 p.m. Friday

The 5-1 Blue Raiders sprang back in earnest from their first loss – 8-3 to Elmira by dealing Binghamton a 58-20 defeat last weekend, with quarterback Dom Cardinale making good on nine of 17 passes for 176 yards and two TDs.

Union-Endicott (1-4) follows this one with games at Binghamton and home against Elmira.

Oneonta at Johnson City, 7 p.m. Friday

Johnson City will seek its second win and second in succession when it hosts the 1-4 Yellowjackets.

In last weekend’s 34-0 roll past Chenango Valley, Peyton Brzozowy rushed nine times for 143 yards, Felix Morales rushed 13 times for 103 yards, and each scored two touchdowns on a night the Wildcats’ 314 rushing yards came on an 11.2-per-carry average.

Newark Valley at Bainbridge-Guilford, 7 p.m. Friday

It’ll be a short turnaround leading to Homecoming for Bainbridge-Guilford, which on Monday completed a 48-46 win against Deposit-Hancock in a game suspended by inclement weather. B-G held on despite being outscored 21-0 in the fourth.

Connor Davy completed nine of 11 passes for 141 yards and two TDs for the winners, and rushed 11 times for 150 yards and three more scores.

Newark Valley (3-2) made it three consecutive wins with last weekend’s 22-16 success at Walton. The Cardinals are 2-0 away from home.

Chenango Forks at Maine-Endwell, 1:30 Saturday

Maine-Endwell has scored 53 points per game, with big-yardage potential seemingly at every turn. Chenango Forks’ opponents have mustered a seven-point average.

The Spartans’ 27-game win streak has them holding steady at their customary position atop New York State Sports Writers Association Class B rankings. Forks (3-2) is 17th among Class C teams, its losses by 8-0 to Windsor and – via a TD reception in the waning seconds – 19-15 to Waverly.

Maine-Endwell has won the most recent two games in this series bringing together programs that have claimed seven state championships apiece, following six successive Blue Devils victories.
