See who the Happy State Bank Athletes of the Month are for September

Time to take a look at who we thought the best athletes of the last month were in high school. It's time to unveil the Happy State Bank Athletes of the Month.

Let's start with the male.

Dawson Jaco, Bushland, Football

Bushland’s Dawson Jaco (10) passes the ball during a non-district game against Canadian, Friday night, September 1, 2023, at Wildcat Stadium, in Canadian, Texas. Canadian won 55-35.

Just when you think Jaco has done it all, he keeps raising the bar. Jaco broke a Bushland single-game record for touchdowns against El Paso Riverside with eight and followed it up with a seven-touchdown performance the week after against Muleshoe. He had four against River Road before the second string took over. The past four games, Jaco has gone 73-of-92 for 1,295 yards, 16 touchdowns and just one interception while rushing for five touchdowns. Bushland is undefeated in that stretch.

Blair Pennington, Amarillo High, Volleyball

Amarillo High’s Blair Pennington (1) hits the ball at the net in a District 3-5A game against Caprock, Tuesday night, October 10, 2023, at Amarillo High School, in Amarillo, Texas. Amarillo High won 3-0.

There's multiple Lady Sandies that could take this recognition, but Pennington gets the nod. In the past month, the setter has compiled 163 assists, 11 aces, 25 digs and six blocks across seven matches, all victories. There were questions entering the year on how AHS would handle the loss of Jo Moffitt after she took her talents to Division I Lamar University. Pennington has answered those questions and then some.
