See which District One title winner is Bucks County area boys basketball Coach of the Year

There's one thing Mike Fergus loves doing in mid-March.

"I hate this time of the year if you're not playing basketball," Fergus said.

Fergus' teams have been regular participants in the end-of-year District One and PIAA state playoffs for decades.

This season, which was his 42nd as a head coach and his 10th year at Dock Mennonite, Fergus' squad again reached the PIAA Class AA state quarterfinals by winning 19 of its last 20 games before falling to Holy Cross.

Dock extended its Bicentennial Athletic League regular-season win streak to 44 games and repeated as district and BAL champion.

Fergus guided the Pioneers to a 25-5 record despite losing three starters and several more regulars to graduation, including all-time leading boys' scorer Nate Lapp (now playing baseball at Millersville).

Dock did it with lots of defense, allowing an average of 42 points per game while drawing a total of 40 offensive fouls and opponents shooting just 38 percent from the field.

For all of those accomplishments, Fergus is the 2023-24 Courier Times/Intelligencer Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.

"It was a very rewarding season and a great bunch of kids," Fergus said. "This team worked hard, believed in each other and our coaches, and really competed."

The 69-year-old Fergus has won 100 games at four high schools — Robert E. Lee in Texas (133-88), State College (133-70 coaching the boys and girls), North Penn (171-140) and Dock (181-87). That gives him a career mark of 618-383. He was also a college assistant for five seasons.

"He just knows so much about the game," said Dock junior guard Robbie Sukaly. "He is the most-prepared coach I’ve ever had. … I think his biggest strength is never being satisfied. He's always pushing us to get better every day."
