Sectional Baseball Roundup: Five Marion-area teams heading to districts

MARION — Five Marion-area baseball teams remain alive in the postseason.

Heading to the districts will be Highland, Pleasant and North Union in Division III and Northmor and Elgin in Division IV.

Here's a roundup of all the sectional action played this week from around the area:

● Elgin's 5-2 sectional final win over Berne Union in Division IV was previously reported. To get to that game the fifth-seeded Comets (now 15-8) got by No. 11 Delaware Christian 8-2. Elgin pounded 11 hits against DC (10-7) as Mitchell Askew had two doubles and three RBIs, Quinten Harrison a double and single and Nash Lust three singles. Harrison gave up two hits and six walks with seven strikeouts in 5⅔ innings, while Brody Wood and Corebyn Jones pitched in relief.

● Also in Division IV, top seeded Northmor edged No. 12 Madison Christian 1-0 in Thursday's sectional final. Drew Hammond led the Golden Knights (21-5) by throwing 10 strikeouts, four walks and one hit allowed over MC (7-7). Trevor Brubaker struck out the side in the seventh inning to get the save. Hammond doubled and scored a run off Jack Bowdre's RBI single.

Northmor will now face No. 4 Mechanicsburg (19-5) Monday at 5 p.m. at home in a district semifinal. Mechanicsburg dropped No. 14 Ridgedale (1-14) 12-2 in a sectional semifinal game earlier in the week.

● In Division III, No. 13 Pleasant defeated No. 21 Mount Gilead (6-13) 3-0 in a semifinal game. In the title contest, the Spartans (8-13) held No. 10 Fairbanks (10-13) to six hits in a 2-1 win. Pleasant had just four hits and struck out 13 times against the Panthers.

The Spartans will now play at top seed Heath (22-2) Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a district semifinal.

● No. 2 Highland needed only five innings to stop No. 20 Madison-Plains 16-0 in the D-III sectional final. M-P (9-17) was held to two hits as Kort Sears earned the win for the Scots (23-3). Nine Highland players had hits as Sears tripled and singled, Evan Johnson singled twice for four RBIs, and Hayden Kline singled twice. Jace Brooks scored three times.

Highland will host No. 11 Columbus Academy (10-14) in Tuesday's district semifinal.

● No. 7 North Union started its Division III run with an 11-1 win over No. 16 Amanda-Clearcreek. Tyler Krebehenne tossed a one-hitter over A-C (8-15), striking out five and walking two. Eight players scored a run with Landon Converse hitting a home run and single, Krebehenne a triple and Drew Schmidt two singles.

The Wildcats (15-9) followed it up with a 10-0 win over six innings against No. 15 Liberty Union. Converse again homered as Evan Beery added two singles for three RBIs, and Mason Bright gave up two hits, one walk and six strikeouts against the Lions (9-13). NU scored five runs in the first inning.

North Union will go to No. 3 West Jefferson (18-5) Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a district semifinal matchup.

● Also in D-III, No. 14 Cardington handled No. 18 Fredericktown 16-1. Wyatt Wade and James Fiant combined to throw five hits, four walks and five strikeouts against the Freddies (6-20). For Cardington, A.J. Hall singled three times for three runs and three RBIs, while Wade and Fisher Schuman both singled twice. Schuman drove in three runs, while Denton Garrison scored four runs and Wyatt Denny three runs.

In the sectional final, No. 6 Newark Catholic (13-10) held the Pirates (13-14) to four hits over six innings of the 12-2 outcome. NC scored seven runs in the third inning to break open the scoreless game.

● In Division I, No. 43 Central Crossing edged No. 37 Marion Harding 3-1 in a semifinal. Central Crossing is 6-22, while the Presidents fell to 8-14.

● No. 13 Johnstown scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat No. 16 River Valley 5-4 in a Division II semifinal. The Vikings tied the game at 4-4 with a four-run fourth inning. Johnstown (9-17) held RV (8-14) to five hits as Dominic Weber led with a double and single for two RBIs.
