Section 4 girls hoops semifinals set. The teams that stood out in quarterfinals

Semifinals in five of the six classifications of Section 4 girls basketball are set following a Friday filled with 12 quarterfinal contests across three classes.

There were no quarterfinals in classes AA or A. Class AAA's lone sectional participants ‒ Elmira and Corning ‒ have byes into the championship game.

The top-four seeds in every quarterfinal in classes B, C and D advanced to Tuesday semifinals.

Class C: Top seed dominant

Top-seeded Watkins Glen scored the first 18 points, holding ninth-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford off the scoreboard until Chandler Benjamin banked in a runner with 1:49 to go in the first half. The Lake Hawks led by double-digits the rest of the way in a 42-20 victory in a Class C quarterfinal.

Rachel Vickio was high scorer for the Lake Hawks with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. She grabbed 15 rebounds. Brianna Hatch netted nine points.

Elsewhere in Class C, Jordan Smith had 15 points and five blocked shots, and Caroline Wasileski had 13 points to go with four blocked shots, as third-seeded Moravia rolled to a 51-32 win over sixth-seeded Delhi.

Semifinals will be played at Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden. Watkins Glen faces fourth-seeded Unatego and Moravia takes on second-seeded Greene.

Greene beat seventh-seeded Marathon, 51-20, and Unatego cruised to a 44-15 win over fifth-seeded Union Springs, last year's Class C champion in Section 4 and a state semifinalist.

Class B: Rivalry clash on the horizon

The Class B quarterfinals included wins from top-seeded Chenango Forks and fourth-seeded Chenango Valley, setting them up to face each other in one semifinal at Forks.

In Friday's action, the Blue Devils downed eighth-seeded Seton Catholic Central, 40-31; and Chenango Valley stifled fifth-seeded Waverly, 51-15.

Newark Valley, seeded second but ranked first in the state in Class B by the New York State Sports Writers Association, pulled away in the fourth quarter for 65-46 victory over 10th-seeded Sidney. The Cardinals host third-seeded Susquehanna Valley in the other semifinal after SV topped No. 6 seed Oneonta, 37-27.

Last year Newark Valley beat Chenango Forks for the Class B title, 51-35, after advancing to the Class C state final in 2022.

Looking ahead in other classes

In Class AA semifinals Tuesday, top-seeded Horseheads hosts fourth-seeded Binghamton, and second-seeded Union-Endicott is home against third-seeded Vestal.

The Class A semifinals will pit fourth-seeded Norwich at top-seeded Johnson City, and third-seeded Maine-Endwell at second-seeded Owego Free Academy.

Class D's semifinals will be played at SUNY Delhi. Top-seeded Edmeston/Morris hosts fourth-seeded Schenevus and second-seeded Cherry Valley-Springfield is home against third-seeded South Kortright/Andes.

In quarterfinal results, Edmeston/Morris beat Charlotte Valley, 57-26; CV-S topped Stamford/Jefferson, 51-40; South Kortright/Andes beat Worcester, 44-41; and Schenevus downed Richfield Springs/ODY, 52-43.
