Second week of high school football season features 21 area games for Watertown, Aberdeen

It is the second week of the South Dakota High School football season, but it's the opening week of the season for the state's Class 11AAA, 11AA and 11A teams.

Three local schools are part of that equation. Watertown is set to host fourth-rated Brookings and fifth-rated Aberdeen Central hosts top-rated Pierre in Class 11AA Eastern South Dakota football games slated for 7 p.m. on Friday.

Class 11A Milbank will also kick off its season on Friday, hosting Beresford at 7 p.m.

All of the area games are set for 7 p.m. on Friday.

Interesting Matchups

Leola-Frederick Area at Warner: Second-rated Class 9A Warner, the state runner-up last fall, opens its season with what could be a tricky matchup with Class 9AA Leola-Frederick (1-0).

Hamlin at Dell Rapids St. Mary: The Chargers are fourth-rated in Class 9AA and the Cardinals are third-rated in Class 9B. Both teams won their openers last week.

Faulkton Area at Hitchcock-Tulare: No. 1-rated and defending state champion Hitchcock-Tulare (1-0) hosts fourth-rated Faulkton Area (1-0) in a Class 9B matchup. The game will be played in Tulare.

Deuel at Aberdeen Roncalli: This will be a good early-season measuring stick for the two Class 11B squads. The Cardinals and Cavaliers each won their openers last week.

Other Games

Elkton-Lake Benton at Estelline-Hendricks: The Elks (1-0), who are receiving votes in Class 9AA, visit the Class 9A Redhawks in Estelline.

Sully Buttes at Potter County: The Battlers scored 68 points in a season-opening win last week and now host the Chargers (0-1) in Hoven. It is Hoven's homecoming game.

Florence-Henry at Britton-Hecla: The Falcons didn't fair well in their season opener against Hamlin last week. Britton-Hecla held off Great Plains Lutheran in its opener.

Northwestern at Ipswich: Both teams are 0-1, so somebody is going to break into the win column.

Freeman-Marion/Freeman Academy at Iroquois-Lake Preston: This is the second of three-straight home games for the Sharks (0-1) and they'll face a FMFA team that won its opener. The game will be played in Lake Preston.

De Smet at Stanley County: The second-rated Class 9B Bulldogs (1-0) head to Fort Pierre to take on the the Class 9AA Buffaloes (1-0).

Groton Area at Redfield: The two Northeast Conference foes are looking to bounce back from season-opening losses.

Timber Lake at Herreid-Selby Area: The Wolverines (0-1) are another team looking to bounce back when they host the Panthers (1-0) in Selby.

Sioux Valley at Sisseton: The Redmen won their season opener 40-0 but face a stiff task against the third-rated Class 11B Cossacks (1-0).

Dakota Hills at Mobridge-Pollock: The two 0-1 teams will match up at 7 p.m. in Mobridge.

Great Plains Lutheran at Waverly-South Shore: The Eastern Coteau Conference foes square off in Waverly, looking to even their record at 1-1 after season-opening losses.

Clark-Willow Lake at Webster Area: First-year head coach and former Webster Area standout Tyler Wagner got his first career win last week for the host Bearcats. Clark-Willow Lake fell to Deuel in its opener.

Colman-Egan at Deubrook Area: The Dolphins will try to improve to 2-0 when they host Colman-Egan (0-1) in White.

Sunshine Bible Academy at Jones County: The game will be played in Murdo. Each team fell in their season openers last week.
