PORTSMOUTH - The Portsmouth High School girls basketball team entered Tuesday's matchup on a three-game winning streak. Standing in the way of four in a row, was undefeated Bedford.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-3 lead after the first quarter, and though Clippers outscored Bedford 47-35 over the final three quarters, it wasn't enough in a 56-50 Division I loss at Stone Gymnasium.

"I'm proud of the girls," Portsmouth head coach Tim Hopley said. "You come out and you're down 21-3 after 8 minutes; Bedford knocked down a ton of shots, and not a lot went right for us in the first quarter. We very easily could've packed it up and gone home and been their next 40- or 50-point victim ... but we didn't go away, we kept grinding at it."

Avery Romps led Portsmouth (7-3) with 22 points. Maddie MacCannell added nine points and Margaret Montplaisir and Bridget Emery each scored seven.

Lyla Stein led Bedford (10-0) with 16 points, while Lana McCarthy had 15, and Annie Zink 14.
