Scuffle with Danny Green leaves JJ Redick bloody

There’s no lack of intensity in an NBA Playoff game, and it ramps up as teams get closer to reaching the Finals.

The opening game of the second round series between the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers may have been headlined by a superstar performance from Kawhi Leonard, but some heated moments — complete with a little blood — between the two teams sets the stage for some drama to keep an eye on as the series continues.

Midway through the third quarter, 76ers guard JJ Redick got tangled up with Toronto’s Danny Green, taking a couple errant shots to the face. The bumps opened up a cut and a little blood inside the mouth of Redick, who then had a little insult added to his injury by picking up a technical foul for hounding the referee.

“There was actually two plays, that’s why I was upset,” explained Redick after the game. “I got hit once, my mouth started bleeding, they called a foul. Danny tried to do the same thing again, hit me again, and then it really opened up.”

You can draw your own conclusions based on the video about whether or not Redick’s own actions played a part in his injury.

Redick trapped Green after the exchange with a two-handed foul, which ended up being reviewed for a flagrant, a decision he definitely did not agree with.

“I’m not sure know why they reviewed it for a flagrant, that was one of the softest reviews ever,” Redick mentioned post-game.

His technical foul came after the play, when he followed the official with a mouth full of blood, angrily asking for an explanation about why Green hadn’t been whistled for the elbow the second time.

“I told (the referee) afterwards, ‘look, I was upset, I was bleeding, you guys were clearly watching it, you just called it two plays before that.’”

After the whistles settled and Redick calmed down, he made his plea for forgiveness. “I apologized for my profanity. Sometimes when you get hit in the face a couple of times you black out for a second.”
