Scottie Scheffler finishes strong, Jordan Spieth struggles in first round of U.S. Open

The U.S. Open began today, and amid the drama surrounding the PGA and LIV alliance, some notable former Texas stars participated.

Scottie Scheffler, the current No. 1 player in the world and a Texas graduate, ended the first round tied for seventh at 3-under par.

His first nine holes were underwhelming, as Scheffler began the day with a bogey before returning to even on the ninth hole. However, the former UT star's putting began to heat up on the final nine. He found birdies on the 10th and 12th hole and then hit back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th. He bogeyed the final hole of the day to drop a stroke.

Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler finished the day tied for the lead at 8-under par. Before they shot 62, there had been only two 8-under rounds in U.S. Open history

Fellow Texas-ex Jordan Spieth did not have nearly as good of a day. The three-time major winner ended at 2-over par, putting him tied for 83rd.
