Schuemann's seven goals helps Lakeview dominate in first round of lacrosse regionals

BATTLE CREEK - If Monday night was going to be the final time Luke Schuemann was going to play lacrosse on his home field, he wanted to it be something to be remembered.

That goal was achieved with a standout individual effort by the Spartan senior. The bigger goal was to help his team advance in the regionals, which also happened as Lakeview extended its season.

Schuemann had a game-high seven goals, matching his season high for a single game, in the victory.

"The big point of tonight was to show we are ready for the playoffs and we are ready to go," Schuemann said. "I wanted to play well in my final game here. I also wanted our team to play well. I came out here wondering if we were going to be ready for the postseason and I think we showed we were."

As the No. 2 seed in the region, Lakeview was a favorite to get past Ovid-Elsie as the Spartans improved to 11-6 overall.

"More than anything, we understood what we did in the regular season happened and that was great. But anything can happen in the playoffs and we wanted to come out and play our game and do our thing and it worked out for us," Lakeview coach Jerry Haadsma said.

Schuemann scored the first goal of the game to set the tone and Lakeview was up 6-1 to end the first quarter with the senior getting three tallies early.

"One thing we struggled a bit with this year was starting out strong against teams that we knew we were stronger than. So it was good to see us play with our brains and play our best and get off to a good start," Haadsma said.

The Spartans were up 14-1 by halftime as the second half was played under a mercy-rule running clock.

Aiden Downey had three goals for Lakeview as Dieter Bloch, Melvin May and Pine Schuemann added two goals each. Ethan Genier also added a goal. The Spartans' Rykert Bloch was strong in goal, only allowing the one score through the first two quarters.

"I liked how we played," Haadsma said. "We got everyone in there, had a great time. It was our last game of the season in our beautiful facility and it was fun to all be together one last time in our home base and have fun doing it."
