Saturday's high school highlights: Notre Dame-West Burlington wrestlers crown 5 champions

Notre Dame-West Burlington's wrestling team crowned five individual champions en route to a second place team finish in Saturday's Farr Jebens Invitational, hosted by Maquoketa Valley.

Carter West, Blaise Frazier, Sam West, River Belger and C.J. Walrath each won their respective weight classes.

Dyersville Beckman won the 11-team tournament with 187 points and the Nikes were right behind with 181.5. MFL MarMac finished third with 180 points.

Carter West won the 106-pound class, advancing to the finals with two byes and a fall. In the title match, he needed just 41 seconds to pin Cael Steinkamp of Center Point-Urbana.

Frazier, at 132 pounds, opened with a bye and won two matches before pinning MFL MarMac's Holden Mathis in 31 seconds in the championship match.

Sam West had a bye and wins by fall and decision before beating Midland's Jared Crock, 10-4, for the 160-pound title.

Belger, after a first round bye, pinned two opponents before pinning MFL MarMac's Kashton Mathis in 3:07 for the 170-pound title.

Walrath advanced to the finals in the 182-pound brackets with a bye, a fall and a injury default. He then pinned Center Point-Urbana's Collin Hoskins in 1:31 for the title.

The Nikes' Isaiah Fenton also reached the championship round. Advancing with a fall and two decisions, he finished second after losing to MFL MarMac's Gabe McGeough, 5-4, in the finals.

PEREZ-HALL LEADS BHS: Julian Perez-Hall finished second in the 220-pound class to lead Burlington in the 15-team Ottumwa Invitational.

Host Ottumwa won the team title with 173.5 point and Sigourney took second with 168. Keokuk was 11th with 55 points, Burlington was 13th at 42 and Mediapolis finished 14th with 40.5 points.

Perez-Hall opened with two byes, then he pinned Moravia's Matthew McDanel in 3:52. In the final match, Albia's Paul Ballard pinned Perez-Hall in 3:18.

Burlington also got seventh place finishes from Braxton Hutchinson (106 pounds) and Buxton Carlson (113).

Mediapolis finished with one individual champion. Quinten Aney, a 138 pounds, drew a bye and then won by technical fall and a fall to reach the finals. There he won a 13-5 major decision over Kirksville's Lane Patterson for the championship.

Mediapolis's Lucas Wagenbach finished fourth at 160 pounds.

Jordan Salyers provided Keokuk's best performance with a third place finish at heavyweight. The Chiefs also got a fourth place finish from Dakota Haage at 182 and a sixth place Kolbe Barnes at 170.

NEW LONDON WINS 3 TITLES: New London's Marcel Lopez, Dominic Lopez and Josh Glendening each won individual titles to lead the Tigers to a seventh place team finish in the 15-team Gary Curtis Invitational, hosted by Highland at Riverside.

WACO and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union each had one individual champion.

Alburnett won the team championship with 172.5 points, 13 better than runner-up Wilton. New London was seventh with 108 points, WACO took ninth at 98, Columbus/W-MU was 12th with 78 points and Mount Pleasant scored 36 points for 14th place.

Marcel Lopez won the 126-pound title with three technical falls. In the finals, he defeated Alburnett's Blaine McGraw, 25-10, in 4:46. Dominic Lopez also recorded three technical falls. In the 152-pound finals, he beat Iowa City Regina's Sam Atchison, 25-10, in 5:08.

Glendening pinned all three of his opponents at 182 pounds. In the finals he pinned Christopher Waikel of Regina in 1:16. New London's Trent Wilkerson went 2-1 on the day and finished second at 195 pounds.

WACO's Jonah Clark also pinned three opponents en route to an individual championship. In the 220-pound championship match, Clark pinned Logan Wright of West Branch in 1:32.

WACO also got a second place from Louden Huisenga (145) and fourth place finishes from Gage Samo (106) and Larz Smith (138).

Columbus/W-MU's Lane Scorpil won the 120-pound championship. He advanced to the finals with a bye, a fall and a decision, then posted a 15-6 major decision over Alburnett's Preston Klosterman for the title.

The Wildcats also got a fourth place finish from Gerardo Orozco at 160 pounds.

Mount Pleasant's top finisher was Bowen Davis, who finished third at 138 pounds.

BLOODHOUNDS GO 1-2: Fort Madison won one of three dual meets in the Lepic Duals, hosted by Iowa City West High School.

The Bloodhounds defeated West, 40-35, but lost to Norwalk, 53-30, and to Pleasant Valley, 47-30.

Isaac Thacher was Fort Madison's only triple winner, pinning all three of his opponents at 195 pounds.

Fort Madison's Aiden Pennock (145), Gavin Wiseman (152) and Teague Smith (160) each pinned two opponents. Also picking up two wins each were Gavyn Siemens (106), Logan Pennock (120), Emmett Kruse (126) and Daniel Sokolik (220).

L-M HAS 5 CHAMPS: Five Louisa-Muscatine wrestlers won individual championships in the Northeast Invitational at Goose Lake.

They were Skyler Beck (113), Gavin Mills (138B), Will Hoopes (145B), Kendal Pugh (170) and Seth Barajas (170B). The Falcons' Hunter Dickman finished fourth at 126 pounds.

BOLINE LEADS WAPELLO: Wapello's Dakota Boline won two of three matches and finished second in the heavyweight division of the 11-team Corky Stuart Invitational, hosted by BGM in Brooklyn.

Wapello's Jacob Chamberlain (132) and Elijah Belzer (145) each finished third. Zach Harbison (120), Carter Ball (182) and Caleb Ealey (195) each finished fourth.

West Marshall won the team title with 207 points. Wapello was seventh at 130.

GIRLS WRESTLING

2 RUNNERS-UP FOR WACO: Two WACO wrestlers finished second in their weight classes at the Highland tournament in Riverside.

WACO's Heaven Steege (Class 7) and Bralyyn Wagler (Class 16) both finished second. Alyssa Ferdig was third in Class 5 and Rylee Rice was fourth in Class 6.

Mount Pleasant's Ella McNamee was second in Class 2. She pinned her first two opponents, then lost a decision in the finals. The Panthers' Abby Blint finished third in Class 4, pinning Clear Creek-Amana's Marlie McBride in 2:58 of the the third place match.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CHARGERS WIN TWICE: Illini West won two games Saturday in the Central-Southeastern Classic at Camp Point, Illinois.

The Chargers beat Liberty, 65-17, then toppled Lewistown, 68-28. Illini West improved to 19-1.

Against Liberty, the Chargers' Caydee Kirkham scored 23 points and Josie Bryan added nine. Against Lewistown, Kirkham had 18 points, Reagan Reed scored 11, Hallie Ray had 10 and Bryan and Rylee Reed each scored nine.

BOYS BASKETBALL

W-MU 55, HOLY TRINITY 34: Cam Buffington's 16 points led Winfield-Mount Union past Holy Trinity.

Andrew Brown added 13 points for W-MU. Nick Fullenkamp paced Holy Trinity with six points. Adam Sobczak and Luke Hellige each added six.

ILLINI WEST 35, KEOKUK 33: The Chargers edged Keokuk in a Hancock County tournament game.

Diego Garcia scored 10 points for Keokuk.

BOYS SWIMMING

BHS FINISHES 8TH: Burlington finished eighth in the nine-team Linn-Mar Invitational, but John Cottrell set a BHS school record.

Cottrell finished 12th in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.5 seconds, breaking the previous school record of 57.03 set by Kale Schuff.

Waukee won the team title with 424.5 points and was followed by Iowa City West (406), Pleasant Valley (329), Linn Mar (328), West Des Moines Dowling (219), Sioux City (207), Monona (183.5), Burlington (39) and Rock Island (34).

Burlington's highest event finish was a ninth place in the 200-yard medley relay. Aiden Woodsmall, Will Davidson, John Cottrell and Nathan Parks were timed at 1:47.04.

Cottrell was 13th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.8.
