Sanchez, Moreu, Martinez win at USA Boxing National Open
Mar. 11—New Mexico amateur boxers D'Angelo Sanchez, Yoruba Moreu Jr. and Sebastian Martinez won their first-round bouts on Monday in the USA Boxing National Open at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Las Cruces' Sanchez, fighting in the Elite Division 119-pound class, defeated California's Giovanni Cruz Estrada by unanimous (5-0) decision.
Albuquerque's Moreu, competing at 125 pounds in the Elite Diviision, defeated Georgia's Allberto Sostre by split (3-2) decision.
Two judges scored the three-round bout 30-27 for Moreu, another saw it 29-28 for the Albuquerque left-hander.
Two judges had it 29-28 for Sostre, also a southpaw.
At 156 pounds in the Elite Division, Martinez (no hometown listed) defeated Arkansas' Silas Montoya by split (4-1) decision.
New Mexico Elite 119-pounder Jimmie Perez lost by split (3-2) decision to Ohio's Jeffrey Thomas.
Thomas is Sanchez's opponent for their second bout on Wednesday.
Moreu's opponent on Wednesday is Colorado's Mariano Martin, who defeated New England's Shyne Ferenendez-Conce by split (3-2) decision.
Martinez won't fight again until Thursday, when he'll face Texan Sergio Angel Soto, who drew a first-round bye.
At 147 pounds, New Mexicans Osmel Caraballo and Leon Hernandez lost their opening bouts by RSC (referee stopped contest) in the single-elimination tournament.
