Sam Howell makes most of first reps in OTA’s for Washington

Former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Sam Howell is entering his first season as the starter for the Washington Commanders. With the team moving on from Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke, the franchise is looking to usher in a new era.

Howell will battle with veteran Jacoby Brissett this offseason for the starting job but the second-year quarterback is getting the first-team reps and it’s his job to lose. With the Commanders opening up OTA’s this week, Howell impressed early on per reports.

Here is what Commanders writer Zach Selby wrote on Howell in OTA’s:

— Howell looked in command of the offense in the huddle and during plays, but his accuracy stuck out on several occasions. He only had four incompletions combined in both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills: one was out of bounds targeting Brian Robinson, but the rest were drops. One of the more impressive passes was to Terry McLaurin with Benjamin St-Juste bearing down on him. Another highlight was a sideline toss to John Bates, who made the snag right before Jartavius Martin could break up the play.

Now, it’s just May and it’s still VERY early in the offseason process but this is certainly good news for Howell.

Next up for Howell is keeping this momentum going and bringing that into training camp to secure the starting job.
