Saints sign a new backup quarterback off the Titans practice squad

A new vacancy opened on the New Orleans Saints active roster after Drew Brees was designated to the injured reserve list, and they didn’t take much time filling it. They signed a new backup quarterback in Trevor Siemian, whose Denver Broncos defeated the Saints in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome back in 2016 (off of a botched call on a blocked extra-point kick return, when the defender’s white cleats clashed with the white sideline paint and he was mistakenly not ruled out of bounds. No, I’m not still bitter.).

Siemian, 28, went 13-12 as a starter for the Broncos after being picked in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. He appeared in one game for the New York Jets in 2019 before suffering a season-ending injury, and was previously slotted into the Tennessee Titans practice squad behind Ryan Tannehill and Logan Woodside. He’s now one of three quarterbacks on New Orleans’ active roster, behind Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston.

NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that Siemian is two days into the COVID-19 acclimation protocol, which means he will not be eligible for Sunday’s game with the Atlanta Falcons. New additions from other teams must go through five days of COVID-19 testing before they can join their new teammates, which is what Saints linebacker Kwon Alexander experienced after being acquired in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers.

Of course, ideally Saints fans will never see Siemian take the field. He’s here as a last-resort option in case both Hill and Winston are unavailable before Brees returns to action, and to help pad out the minutes in practice throwing sessions. So expect him to spend some time picking up the playbook and terminology before arriving at the team facility next week.
