Since 2011, the New Orleans Saints defense has been one of the NFL’s worst, and has often nullified any terrific performances put on by Drew Brees and the offense.

So far, this team has allowed the most points-per-game at 30.7, according to ESPN.com. only four teams are allowing more yards per matchup than the Saints (397.4.) So yeah, the defense is once again a mess.
Well, they did try to make it better, according to Ed Werder from ESPN.com:
#Saints made play for #Browns CB Joe Haden before #NFL trade deadline but determined price was too high, per sources

One high-level #Saints source characterizes team's interest in #Browns CB Joe Haden as being mostly due diligence. Injuries, salary issues

As Christopher Dabe from NOLA.com noted, Delvin Breaux is nearly recovered and should join the team again soon. Perhaps that played a factor in the Saints unwilling to meet Cleveland’s acting price.
The Saints should have gone for Haden, no matter the price, if they were in playoff contention. But this team is sitting at 3-4, and there’s simply no way they’re going to be a Super Bowl contender this season. Because of that, they were smart to hold off on mortgaging the future for a short-term fix.
New Orleans’ defense was better in Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks in their 25-20 victory, but it’s not even close to being better right now. Once Sheldon Rankins and Breaux return, perhaps the Saints will show improvement.
Haden would have been a nice addition to a struggling secondary, but the Saints need to rebuild the defense entirely, and not spend so much to get veterans. A wise move by the front office here.
