Saints need a change: It starts with Sean Payton

The New Orleans Saints had everything in their own hands on Monday night. A home win against the Atlanta Falcons (a team they usually dominate,) would put them in a four-way tie for first in the NFC south.

Consider that over. The Saints played their worst game at home in the Drew Brees era, getting absolutely embarrassed in a 45-32 loss. The Falcons (2-1,) own the tiebreaker and are essentially three games up on the Saints. Consider them done at this point.

New Orleans still has to play Carolina twice, on top of Kansas City, Denver, Seattle and Arizona. Consider them lucky to get six wins this year.

The Saints have settled for enough mediocrity. They’re heading for their fourth losing season in five years. Drew Brees is 37 and his prime is being wasted. They extended him and are not getting rid of him.

But it’s time for Sean Payton to go. He was so close to leaving last year until they made the questionable call to give him a five-year extension. Payton would be a great coach on a rebuilding team (Miami or Chicago?) But his time in New Orleans is up. They haven’t won a Super Bowl in seven years.

Payton’s lost the magic in New Orleans. This team is wasting prime years from a once-in-a-generation quarterback with Payton. See what Denver did for Peyton Manning? Out goes John Fox, and Gary Kubiak wins him a Super Bowl in his final season.

I didn’t go into great detail here, because I don’t have to. The Saints have no reason to keep Sean Payton beyond this point. It’s time for a new start.

Unless they’re planning to settle for another disgustingly embarrassing season.
