Ryan Tannehill injury update: Latest information on Tennessee Titans QB's ankle

This story has been updated with new information as of 6:30 p.m. CT.

Tennessee Titans starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill injured his right ankle in the second half of Sunday's 24-16 loss against the Baltimore Ravens in London and did not play in the final quarter.

Tannehill initially injured his ankle on a hit early in the third quarter and tried to play through it before being relieved by Malik Willis.

It's the second season in a row that Tannehill has injured his right ankle. He missed five total games in two separate periods of the 2022 season with a high right ankle sprain, including the last three games of the season after having surgery.

Here is what you need to know about the injury:

Ryan Tannehill injury update

At Monday's news conference upon the Titans' return from London, coach Mike Vrabel said Tannehill has not been ruled out for the next game, and he'll still be the starter if he can play.

Vrabel said the ankle injury suffered in the game against the Ravens is "similar" to the early stages of his ankle injury in 2022.

Sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Monday that Tannehill has a high right ankle sprain.

"We've got some time here before our next game," Vrabel said. " . . . Then we'll make a decision on his availability next week."

The Titans are on a bye week; their next game is Oct. 29 at home against the Atlanta Falcons (noon CT, CBS).

How Ryan Tannehill injured his ankle

Tannehill started limping on the Titans' second drive of the second half. He was hit on the first play of the series by Ravens defensive lineman Justin Madubuike and came up hobbled after his pass fell incomplete.

He continued with the next two series, limping through a scoring drive and after an interception.

Tannehill was taken to the locker room via cart at the start of the fourth quarter.

He was scheduled to get an MRI once the team arrived back in Nashville.

What Ryan Tannehill said about his injury

Tannehill was on crutches in the locker room after the game when he spoke about the injury after the game.

"I tried to gut it out (but) I couldn't get any force into the throws," he said. "I knew I wasn't going to be able to move. I tried to keep walking it off, but it was getting worse and worse. I wasn't going to be able to make the throws. It was what happened on the pick; Chig (Okonkwo) was open, but I had no push into it and left it short. At that point, I figured I'd be a sitting duck back there and if I can't even put a step into a throw, then I'm not going to be effective."

"It freakin' sucks," Tannehill said about injuring the ankle for a second straight season. "It's a part of the game, but it's not an enjoyable process."

" . . . It's frustrating, right? You battle and you put so much into it, but you have something happen like that, it's frustrating."

What Mike Vrabel said about Ryan Tannehill's injury

Titans coach Mike Vrabel said after the game that he could see Tannehill was having trouble with the ankle.

"You don't want to put him in harm's way and not have the ability to protect himself," Vrabel said.

Will Ryan Tannehill play in Tennessee Titans' next game?

After the London game, Vrabel hesitated to make any declarations about the quarterback position until the Titans knew more about Tannehill's injury and status.

On Monday, Vrabel said that Tannehill will play in the next game if he's not injured, and he'll remain the starter if he can play.

Vrabel did not specify whether Malik Willis or Will Levis would start if Tannehill is not able to play.

The team has a bye week and does not play again until Oct. 29 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Ryan Tannehill's injury history includes ankle surgery

Tannehill didn't address whether his injury was similar to last year's high-ankle sprain, other than it was the same ankle.

In 2022, he missed games against the Texans and Chiefs after getting hurt against the Colts on Oct. 23. He missed the last three games (Texans, Cowboys, Jaguars) after aggravating the ankle injury in the Dec. 18 loss to the Chargers.

Who is behind Ryan Tannehill on Tennessee Titans depth chart?

Malik Willis came into the game and played the final two drives, which resulted in a punt and a field goal.

Willis' athleticism in theory could help him behind the Titans' offensive line that is still trying to figure out the best combination. But he was sacked four times in 15 plays Sunday, with another wiped away by a penalty.

Vrabel brushed off a question Sunday about what would be next if Tannehill is out for any period of time, saying the team would need to know Tannehill's status before making a decision.

Will Levis, the Titans' second-round pick in the 2023 draft, has served as the third quarterback for all six games.
