The Rush: Tiger’s chances, Phil’s absence and everything else Masters 2022

Tiger Woods hopes to make a triumphant return to pro golf just 14 months after a devastating car accident when he tees off at The Masters on Thursday… but what are the odds he’ll win? The Rush has your Masters sportsbook insight. Plus, we’ve got thoughts on Phil Mickelson’s absence from The Masters, two of the wildest shots you’ll ever see on the course and fun facts from Augusta National on Yahoo Sports TikTok.

Video Transcript

- You've said countless times throughout your career that you don't enter a golf tournament unless you think that you can win it.

TIGER WOODS: Mhm.

- So the question is simple. Do you think you can win the Masters this week?

TIGER WOODS: I do.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

JARED QUAY: The 86th Masters Tournament begins today. And I am excited for one reason, and one reason only.

- Really? Why?

JARED QUAY: I'll tell you why. Because I've got a theory that if you've got a lot of time and a lot of money, anybody could be good at golf. Sure, it's a game. But it ain't even a sport.

Have I ever played golf? No. But if I had a lot more time and a lot more money, I'd be at Augusta right now. All right, this probably isn't the best time to rant.

- Probably not.

JARED QUAY: I'm pumped for Tiger Woods to be back on that course, though. As if the guy doesn't already own the title for Best Career Comeback at the Masters for his incredible win in 2019.

- But here it is.

[CHEERING]

The return to glory.

[CHEERING]

- That will be the greatest scene in golf forever, Jim Nantz.

JARED QUAY: El Tigre could outdo himself if he manages to snag his sixth green jacket in his first tournament back in just 14 months after his horrific car accident. But my man is a long shot.

- How long?

JARED QUAY: Like, plus 5,000 to win the whole damn thing long. But that ain't stopping nobody. Because prior to the tourney's first tee time, Tiger was the most bet-on player to win the Masters at BetMGM, with more than twice the bets of any other player. Favorites be damned. Tiger's odds are better than this guy, though.

PHIL MICKELSON: Phil.

- Hey.

PHIL MICKELSON: Mickelson.

JARED QUAY: Yeah. That's because Phil Mickelson ain't playing in the Masters this year. People thought that maybe he'd been uninvited to the tourney after he got caught trying to be slick by partnering with the Saudi government to form a rival to the PGA TOUR.

- Very awkward and cringey.

JARED QUAY: It sure was. But turns out it was Phil's choice to not play. Probably didn't want to take the heat, so he just canceled himself.

It's a bummer we won't have a chance to see a classic Phil-Tiger Sunday showdown. But there's actually plenty of other cool stuff to see at the Masters. Check out Yahoo Sports on TikTok to peep everything from food and drinks to a frickin' hostage crisis at Augusta National. For now, though, I'll leave you with these two incredible shots on the 16th from Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose during Wednesday's practice.
