The Rush: Mac Jones attempts three passes in Patriots wild win over Bills

The New England Patriots are back in a familiar spot atop the AFC after a 14-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills. It was a windy affair with wind gusts reaching 50 MPH and Pats rookie QB Mac Jones attempting just three passes the entire game. In College football, the Heisman Trophy finalists were announced but Twitter was abuzz with who didn’t make the cut and the University of Miami hired Mario Cristobal as its head football coach after dismissing Manny Diaz. But how exactly is Miami funding all the buyouts and the new contract?

JARED QUAY: There's nothing quite like AFC East football. Cold, gritty, boring, but exciting sometimes. The Bills-Patriots match-up lived up to all that on Monday night. And the weather obliged. Before the game, Buffalo was more than a little blustery. Wind gusts reached up to 50 miles an hour.

And I'll tell you what, I feel like those guys from Florida must have been like, this game is from hell. It's freezing out here. One of those Florida guys is Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones, who was born and raised in Jacksonville. And he attempted just three passes the whole game. Three passes. Who needs fancy passing when you can run the rock like this?

- That's for Harris. Has the first down. And breaks it. It's gone.

[CHEERING]

Damien Harris threw everyone. Up the middle for the touchdown. 64 yards.

- The Pats got the most, Belichick in, 14-10 win ever. And guess what? The Patriots now have sole possession of first place in the AFC.

- No.

- Man, I love this time of year. Christmas, food, and college football. And as the college season winds down, the finalists for the Heisman Trophy award were announced on Monday night. We've got Michigan's defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, and Bama quarterback Bryce Young.

But it was who wasn't on the list that's making headlines, though. It seems like a lot of people feel like Michigan State's running back, Kenneth Walker the third, deserved to be a finalist. And rightfully so. Sure, he led his team to attended two records and racked up over 1,600 yards rushing with 18 touchdowns. But apparently, that ain't good enough.

- Not good enough.

- I heard Desmond Howard and Tom Brady were stuffing the ballot box. All right. Let's switch gears to my Alma mater, Miami.

- Look who's back.

- That's right. Miami gave head football coach Manny Diaz his marching orders and brought back Mario Cristobal, who spent the last four seasons at Oregon and won two Pac 12 titles. Pretty dope, right? The elephant in the room is how much all of this is costing Miami. Diaz is getting bought out of his contract for $7 to $9 million dollars. Then they've got to pay Oregon $9 million dollars to buy out Cristobal's contract. And then, of course, they've got to pay Cristobal $8 million dollars a year to actually coach the team.

- That's a lot of money.

So where is all this money coming from? According to "The Athletic," Miami's new health system made $400 million dollars in profits last year.

[COUGHING]

COVID.

[COUGHING]

And the administration decided to allocate some of those resources to the athletic department.

- Convenient.

- This is all hunky dory. And it seems like everybody would welcome the homecoming of Miami native and Cristobal, right? Well, not to be a DEBBIE DOWNER, but people were lobbying against his hiring back in 2015.

[SOUND EFFECT]

Man, you know you ain't popular when someone hires a damn airplane to keep you from getting a job. At the end of the day, all that matters is w's. So we'll see. But I, for one, am optimistic, all right? Because I love when Miami wins championships. Everybody loves when Miami wins championships. We won championships in 1999. And we was partying like Prince.
