The Rush: DK Metcalf’s track debut, Baffert suspended from Churchill Downs, DeChambeau's wild voyage

DK Metcalf fails to advance out of semifinal heat in track debut, Bob Baffert’s winning horse tests positive (again) and it’s a good thing Bryson DeChambeau flies private.

Video Transcript

- DK Metcalf, second from the far right. Second heat of the Nike men's 100. Metcalf's hanging with them at the moment. It's fairly even. DK's doing a good job. On the inside, though, CJ Ouja and Mike Rogers. That was close.

JARED QUAY: Always compete is the mantra of Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, and one of his wide offs did just that on Sunday. DK Metcalf finished 15th out of 17 at his first professional track event, but impressed everyone with a 10.37 in 100 meters. The dude is 6'2", 235 pounds.

So to put that in perspective, the guy that won the heat, Kraven Gillespie, weighs 75 pounds less than he does. Well, let's see what Kraven runs with one of those mini refrigerators on his back, because that's about an extra 75 pounds right there. Right? And yes, football speed may not exactly translate to track speed. But I will never not be impressed by the other thing DK did.

- Different receivers, and this time he lost one, and it's picked off at the goal line. That's Budda Baker. Budda Baker out in front. Can Metcalf track him down? Can he chase him down? And he does to save a touchdown.

JARED QUAY: To DK's credit, he acknowledged after the race that track speed is different. But in this particular case, it wasn't by much.

- By this much.

JARED QUAY: From one sport that had issues with performance enhancing drugs, to another one in the same boat. Churchill Downs has suspended trainer Bob Bafford after the Kentucky Derby winning horse, Medina Spirit tested positive for a banned substance. Bafford, whose horses have tested positive multiple times before, claims that the drug in question, beta methazone, has never been given to Medina Spirit. Look. It's hard to believe a guy with a questionable record that also looks like the next villain in a Pixar movie. Look at that guy.

- Everyone can be super.

JARED QUAY: Look. Medina Spirit can't just trot down to CVS and pick up a prescription. And I doubt he got a plug for that stuff either. And can we all just agree that racing horses is cruel and weird? I mean, I don't mind if Barry Bonds wants to do enough PDs to make his head look like a middle school globe. But at least he's making that decision for himself.

Finally, goffer Bryson DeChambeau had an epic journey to ninth place over the weekend. After thinking he missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte on Friday, he flew back home to Dallas on a private jet. However, on the flight home, he found out that he actually made the cut. So he turned around at 2:45 AM and made his Saturday 8:10 AM tea time with about an hour to spare. Crazy thing is he actually clawed his way back into top 10, shooting 68 on both Saturday and Sunday.

Since golfers pay their own ways to tournaments, DeChambeau schedule was pretty thankful for his six figure paycheck, which more than covered his wayward travel. In fact, that's a pretty expensive private jet flight. Could you imagine he forgot his keys and he was like, hey, pilot, turn the jet around?
