Roundup: Westfall, Zane Trace advance to softball district semifinals

SOFTBALL

Westfall 9, Fairfield 4: The Mustangs punched their ticket to the district semifinals after shutting down the Lions in a Division III sectional final on Thursday. Olivia Dumm pitched a complete game, during which she struck out 13 batters and allowed two earned runs on six hits. Dumm also went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBIs.

Delana Landefeld went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run. Grace Long hit a double and scored two runs, while Makayla Cook went 3-for-4 with a double. Madison Kearney went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Gabby Henry put up a hit and an RBI. Ava Heath also notched a hit and a run.

Zane Trace 2, Lynchburg-Clay 1: The Pioneers took home a sectional title after inching out a win over the Mustangs at home. Brynn Wipert hit a double and batted in a run, and Gracey McCullough hit a triple to end the game 1-for-3. Lexi Scott also went 1-for-3, and Alayna Butler scored a run and stole a base.

Wipert also picked up the win in the circle for the Pioneers. She pitched a complete game, and she struck out three batters while giving up five hits and no earned runs.

Belpre 3, Southeastern 2: The Panthers put up a solid effort but fell short of a Division III sectional title after falling behind the Eagles late on Thursday. Erin Richendollar threw a strong seven innings in the circle, and she struck out seven batters while allowing two earned runs on three hits. Richendollar also went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.

Rowan Ruckel hit another double for the Panthers, and Morgan Ware went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tamra Elliott collected two hits, while Ally Fisher and Grace Brown added one hit apiece. Grace Wireman also scored a run.

Wellston 6, Piketon 0: The Redstreaks fell to the Golden Rockets in their Division III sectional final game on Thursday. They collected one hit in the loss, which came of the bat of Grace Hauck. Hauck notched a single in the third inning and ended the game 1-for-2.

Camryn Campbell pitched six innings for the Redstreaks, and she gave up just three hits while walking two batters. Campbell also recorded five strikeouts and allowed two earned runs in the loss.

VOLLEYBALL

Chillicothe 3, Patriot Prep 0: The Cavaliers made a clean sweep in the first round of the Division II boys volleyball tournament after taking down the Eagles 25-5, 25-7, 25-7.

Mercer Cutright led the Cavaliers in kills after putting up 12 in the match. Daniel Rourke added six, while An Nguyen, Elijah Hardiesty and Landen Cox each put up three. Justin Rubia posted a team-high 19 digs and five aces, and Lucas Sprague collected 16 assists and three aces. Aaron Ballentine put up 10 assists, and Hardiesty tied Rubia with five aces. Isaac Herlihy collected six digs, and Rey Escalera added five.

Chillicothe, as the No. 4 seed, will travel to face No. 2 St. Charles in the regional quarterfinals. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, and it will be hosted inside the St. Charles Robotics Gymnasium.

BASEBALL

Chillicothe 9, Vinton County 1: TJ Barr gave up just two hits and one earned run to lead the Cavaliers to a solid nonconference win over the Vikings on Thursday. The sophomore struck out six batters along the way, and he also pitched a complete game.

Chillicothe pounded out 12 hits in the win. Mason Brown logged three hits, including a triple, and he added an RBI and a run. Ayden Hutchison also had three hits, and he scored three runs. Mason Siberell piled on a single and a double while batting in four runs and scoring once. Aiden Spaulding had two hits and two runs, and Vincent Haller hit a double and scored a run. Steven Nguyen chipped in a single and an RBI as well.

Unioto 2, Circleville 0: The Shermans earned their third nonconference win in four days after shutting out the Tigers through seven innings. Maverick Frump pitched six and one-third innings, during which he gave up three hits, two walks and no runs while striking out three batters. Ashton Crace logged a save after striking out the final two batters and allowing one walk.

Micah Geise, Braxton Platt and KB Perkins all collected hits for the Shermans in the win. Perkins and Isaiah Leeth each scored a run, while Platt and Crace logged an RBI apiece. Geise also notched a stolen base.

Waverly 5, Portsmouth West 1: Quinton Hurd struck out nine batters and gave up just two hits as the Tigers powered past the Senators in a Southern Ohio Conference bout on Thursday.

LT Jordan went 2-for-4 with two runs and three stolen bases, while Jase Hurd went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Ben Nichols went 2-for-4 with a double, and Hunter Hauck batted in a run. Peyton Harris collected a hit, a run and a stolen base, and Jamison Morton went 1-for-3. Creed Smith tacked on a run and a stolen base.
