Roundup: Watkins Memorial boys track wins four events at New Albany

John Apel and Adam Brazier each won an individual event and were together on a winning relay Friday, leading the Watkins Memorial boys track team to a runner-up finish during New Albany’s Eagle Invitational.

Apel won the 200 (22.06) and Brazier won the 400 (50.89). They also joined Joe McIntosh and Jacob Holbert on the winning 800 relay (1:29.89) for the Warriors, who totaled 103 points, finishing second to Reynoldsburg’s 104.5.

Aidan Johnston added a win in the pole vault (12 feet).

Adding runner-up finishes were McIntosh in the 100 (10.97), Holbert in the long jump (21-8.5) and Andrew Kirk in the discus (130-5). Placing third was Tommy Robinson in the high jump (6-0).

In the girls meet, Watkins teammates Dixita Pradhan and Jocelyn Shardell tied for second in the pole vault (8-0). Scarlett Loevenguth, Emily Whitmer, Annie Edward and Ava Moore added a third in the 3,200 relay (10:51.30) as did Loevenguth, Ellah Bigham, Morgan Kandel and Kadence Gorrell in the 1,600 relay (4:27.53).

Brazier, Apel, Anna Stewart and Kamryn Caldwell also won the mixed 1,600 relay (3:53.15).

SOFTBALL

NC beats Utica

Kami Diaz and Jahni Whitney homered, powering Newark Catholic to a 14-4 victory at Utica in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Diaz racked up three hits and two RBIs, and Veronica Bailey added three hits and three runs, Maris Knowlton two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Kylie Gibson and Joanna Bailey two hits, two runs and an RBI apiece and Addi Gerber a triple and three RBIs for the Green Wave (4-4, 2-2). Avery Nagel struck out four in four three-hit innings.

Kaitlin Evans hit a solo home run for Utica (3-5, 2-5). Emily Meyers added two hits and a run, Kiersten Hull a double and a run and Karleigh Lees a double and an RBI.

BASEBALL

Liberty edged

Three errors undid Liberty Christian in a 7-3 loss to Shekinah Christian at Berliner Park in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Evan Dupler struck out four and allowed just one earned run in 5⅔ innings for the Eagles (1-3, 0-3). James Rainier and Aiden Geiger each had a hit and a run, and Luke Mollohan and Dawson Kampii added a hit and an RBI apiece.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Heights wins in five

Maleke Aaron racked up 18 kills Wednesday in Licking Heights' victory, 23-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 15-11, at Chillicothe.

Jaden Peach added seven aces for the Hornets (4-5), and Cleveland Brown Jr. and Mbemba Freeman led the defense.
