ROUNDUP: SMWC women, men fall to high-powered U. of Cumberlands

Nov. 29—Saint Mary-of-the-Woods got within two points of 13th-ranked University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday in NAIA women's basketball inside Knoerle Sports & Recreation Center but fell short 83-65.

Madison Fueger led the Pomeroys with 21 points and six rebounds, Irye Gomez scored 16 and Brooklynn Jones tallied 14, including five in the 11-2 spurt that brought the home team within a basket. Allyson Hardiek added eight points and two blocks and Abby Worley six assists and three steals.

SMWC begins River States Conference play at home Saturday against IU East.

In Tuesday night's men's game between the same two colleges, the Cumberlands built an 18-point halftime lead and held off a strong SMWC second-half comeback to win 93-87.

It was a duel between two of NAIA's highest-scoring offenses — the Cumberlands averaging 88.1 points per game and The Woods at 87.1 ppg.

Cobie Barnes led the Pomeroys (4-3) with 22 points and 10 rebounds, pacing five players in double figures. Chaz Birchfield had 13 points and Greg Jenkins posted 11 with five steals. DaMeriz Merriweather was a spark with 12 points and four assists off the bench and Linton's Lincoln Hale also came off the bench with 10 points.

The Pomeroys' defensive effort was improved coming out of halftime and SMWC cut the deficit to 70-64 on a Barnes 3-pointer with 9 minutes, 1 second left. But the visiting Patriots kept the Pomeroys at bay.

SMWC hits the road to open River States Conference action Saturday against IU East.

Girls basketball

—West Vigo 50, South Vermillion 7 — At West Vigo, the Vikings broke into the win column Tuesday night by taking a big halftime lead, then holding the Wildcats scoreless in the second half.

Lily Ramirez led West Vigo, 1-6, with 12 points. The Vikings play Friday at Greencastle in a Western Indiana Conference doubleheader.

Cambree Stivers had five points for South Vermillion, 0-6. The Wildcats play Thursday at Terre Haute South.

—Northview 51, Terre Haute 27 — At South, Brynlee Clarke had a career-high 34 points for the visiting Knights.

Northview, now 6-1, hosts Sullivan on Friday. South, 1-6, hosts South Vermillion on Thursday.

—Parke Heritage 62, Southmont 33 — At Rockville, the host Wolves pulled away with defensive pressure and balanced scoring for a big nonconference win Tuesday.

Emma Simpson led all scorers with 16 points for Parke Heritage, while Raegan Ramsay added 15 and Cate O'Brien 14.

Parke Heritage, 5-2, plays Thursday at Cascade. Southmont, 5-4, hosts Attica that night.

—Seeger 43, North Vermillion 33 — At Cayuga, the host Falcons lost their Wabash River Conference opener to the defending WRC champions.

Braxtyn Dunham had nine points, Cadence Dunham eight and Reagan Bean seven for North Vermillion, now 3-3 and 0-1. The Falcons play at Parke Heritage next Tuesday.

Rylea Wetz had 15 points, Addie Shrader 12 and Cadence White 10 for the Patriots, 6-1 and 2-0, who host Frontier on Thursday.

Prep wrestling

—Terre Haute North 60, South Vermillion 15 — At North, Eli Ybarra, James Hastings, Jevon Hagans, Cain Godsey, Gavin Lemmons, Cole Baugh, Matthew Kempf, Cameron Baugh, Triston Hancok, Ayden Muncie and Allan Powers were winners for the host Patriots in a dual match.

South Vermillion got its points from Will Clay-Faulkner, Christian Peace and Zack Hess.

—Terre Haute South 61, Owen Valley 12 — At Spencer, the visiting Braves dominated a highly regarded opponent Tuesday.

—North Vermillion 42, Attica 39 — At Cayuga, the host Falcons improved to 3-1 with a close victory.

Winners for North Vermillion were Aden Rangel, Bradley Cope, Hayden Hack and Aiden Hinchee, in addition to several forfeit victories.

North Vermillion competes Saturday at the Fountain Central Invitational.
