Roundup: Newark Generals roll in home finale against Linsly (W.Va.)

Max Morrow notched two goals and an assist Sunday as the Newark Generals hockey team skated to an 8-1 victory against visiting Linsly (W.Va.) in their home finale at Lou and Gib Reese Ice Arena.

The Generals, who play in the Ohio Scholastic Hockey League’s CBJ Cup this weekend, scored three goals in the second period and four in the third.

Evan Spiker, Mason Williams, Woody Struthers, Trevor Enders, Gavin Kessler and Blake Sauberzweig also scored for the Generals, and Spiker and Derek Beneze added a team-best two assists apiece. Dylan McLean made six saves.

INDOOR TRACK

Watkins pair win

John Apel and Jacob Holbert each won events for Watkins Memorial during the Ohio State HS Qualifier #3.

Apel ran a time of 51.26 to win the 400, and Holbert recorded a distance of 20-feet-3.25 to win the long jump. Apel added a runner-up finish in the 200 (23.10) for the Warriors.

Ricketts wins 60

Jaeden Ricketts shined among some of the best in the Midwest.

Ricketts, a Watkins Memorial sophomore representing Plus 2 University Track Club, ran a time of 6.93 to win the 60 during the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase.

Croak wins at Muskingum

Trevor Croak led the Licking Valley boys to a runner-up team finish during the Muskingum February High School Invitational.

Croak won the weight throw (56-11) and added a runner-up finish in the shot put (50-3.75).

The Panthers, who totaled 48 points, trailing just Canon-McMillan (Pa.)’s 61, also had two relays take runner-up. Matthew Fehrman, Marshall Carr, Cooper Hornfeck and Quinn Hornfeck comprised the 1,600 relay (3:43.10), and Fehrman joined Logan Debo, Sam Cooperrider and Anthony Blizzard on the 3,200 relay (8:59.26).

Heath’s Carter Higgins took runner-up in the weight throw (50-4.25).

WRESTLING

Heights claims crown

Licking Heights had four individual champions Saturday, helping the Hornets earn the team championship during the Carey Classic, totaling 268 points, well ahead of Vermilion’s 208.5.

Alexander Merriman went 4-0 with three pins at 106 pounds, Ryan Cote 5-0 with four pins and a technical fall at 113, Landen Cahill 5-0 with four pins at 132 and Ethan Whitt 4-0 with four pins at heavyweight.

Cole Cannon (106), Richard Storts (120) and Brayden Rosebrough (190) each took runner-up.

Three win titles at Logan

Three Licking County wrestlers won championships Saturday during the Logan Invitational.

Northridge’s Treven Angus finished 4-0 at 144 pounds, winning all three of his contested matches by pin. He beat Logan’s Aiden James-Dewey in the final.

Newark’s Kallan Baker finished 5-0 with two pins and two technical falls at 175. He beat Nelsonville-York’s Gavin Richards 6-1 in the final.

Lakewood’s Keegan Jacks pinned all five of his opponents at heavyweight, including Logan’s Dominik Graham in the final.

Taking runner-up were Northridge’s Brazyn Esteph (113), Owen Williams (126) and Braxton Ankrom (132) and Lakewood’s Xander Angle (157).

Rutherford wins at Canal

Ian Rutherford won all five of his matches by pin at heavyweight Saturday for Granville during the Cameron Cross Invitational at Canal Winchester.

Rutherford pinned Canton South’s DeAngelo Spear in the final.

Granville’s Nash Finley (113) and Utica’s Breyden Hill (157) each took runner-up.
