ROUNDUP: Lions top Paris in regional opener, Teutopolis next up

Feb. 20—A balanced scoring attack with three double-digit scorers powered Marshall to a 53-34 victory over Paris in the Lions' gym in Monday night's first round of the Class 2A Newton Regional in the Illinois boys high school basketball state tournament.

Bentley Delp led the Lions with 12 points, followed closely by teammates R.J. Mattas with 11 and Avery Sheets with 10. Six other Lions also scored in the victory, which raised their record to 14-15 for the season.

Paris finished its season 6-25. Marshall faces Teutopolis (20-10) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Newton, followed by host Newton vs. Hutsonville OPH (12-16) at 7:30 p.m. Hutsonville beat Mount Carmel 70-59 on Monday in the Golden Aces' gym. Hutsonville held a 47-44 lead at the end of the third quarter, then exploded for 23 fourth-quarter points.

In other boys basketball news:

—Robinson 62, Vandalia 48 — At Robinson, the Maroons 6-foot-6 senior Noah Gilmore scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked a shot to lead Robinson to victory in Monday's first round of Class 2A Vandalia Regional.

Also for the Maroons, Duke Thompson had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Owen Schmidt had 12 points and five rebounds. Cole Weber and Judson Pinkston led Robinson in assists with six and five, respectively.

As a team, the Maroons hit a crisp 27 of 49 shots from the field, while outrebounding Vandalia 27-19.

In Monday's other Vandalia Regional game, Flora beat Toledo 61-23. On Wednesday, sixth-seeded Robinson (10-19) plays top-seeded Lawrenceville (26-3) at 6 p.m. Fairfield faces Flora at 7:30 p.m.

—Martinsville, Casey advance — In the Class A Casey Regional, Martinsville won 52-44 at Neoga on Monday, and Casey beat visiting Hume Shiloh 70-38.

Also Monday in the Casey Regional, Chrisman won 79-74 at Villa Grove, and Tuscola rolled 86-27 over visiting Broadlands Heritage.

On Wednesday at Casey, Tuscola (26-5) plays Martinsville (13-18) at 6 p.m., and the host Warriors (15-14) play Chrisman (13-16) at 7:30 p.m.

—Goff, T-Bird foe honored — Northview sophomore Brayden Goff is one of the Players of the Week selected for last week's games by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and Franciscan Health.

Goff scored 60 points in two games last week, 24 in a Western Indiana Conference win over Edgewood and a career-high 36 in a 70-56 win at Clay City. He was 15 for 28 from the field, including a 4-for-8 performance from 3-point range, and 26 for 28 from the foul line. He also had 10 rebounds against Edgewood.

Hadley Crosier of Lanesville was one of the girls honored. She had 47 points and seven assists against Jac-Cen-Del and North Central in Saturday's Class A semistate at New Albany.

Men's volleyball

—Woods win two of three — At Hamilton Arena, SMWC jumped out to a 2-0 lead Friday night, but visiting Goshen wasn't giving up the fight.

The Maple Leafs bounced back to win 25-19 in the third and fourth sets, forcing a fifth set. But the Pomeroys came through in the clutch and got the 3-2 victory by taking the fifth set 15-8 on a kill by Joseph Szadorski off the set from Jacob Wisniewski, who had 20 assists.

"We came out hot and got the first two sets," SMWC coach Ian Harris said. "We lost all our energy. The inexperience of our team showed. We really challenged the guys in the fifth set. I told them 'if you guys play together, believe in each other and you trust each other, we will win this fifth set.'"

Szadorski had three of his seven kills in the decisive set.

Freshman Bentley Meyer also put away three kills in the fifth and finished with a team-high 16 on 34 swings for a .265 hitting percentage.

Christian Green chipped in eight kills to go with five blocks. Yammiel Martinez added nine blocks in the middle.

Brycen Yadao had 10 digs to lead SMWC.

On Saturday, The Woods blanked Goshen 3-0 and lost to Brescia (Ky.) 3-1.

SMWC (7-2 overall, 2-0 WHAC) will visit Cornerstone (Mich.) for one match Friday and another one Saturday.

College softball

—Pomeroys split — At Kansas City, Kan., Saint Mary-of-the-Woods rallied for with three runs on three RBI singles by freshmen in the sixth and seventh innings to pick up a 4-3 victory over Columbia College on Monday.

The Pomeroys bounced back from a 5-0 loss to No. 11 Baker to get the dramatic Columbia win. Freshman catcher Ruby Gray came through in the seventh inning with an RBI single to score Justyce Rohrabauh.

SMWC (1-3) travels to Arkansas next weekend to play Williams Baptist and Lyon College.

The Pomeroys opened their season at Kansas City on Sunday, losing to 10th-ranked Midland 8-3 and then to Concordia by a 1-0 score. Abbi Henderson totaled three hits in the two games to lead SMWC.

College basketball

—Blackout Childhood Cancer events at ISU games — Indiana State will host its first Blackout Childhood Cancer game Saturday when the Sycamore men's team plays host to Illinois-Chicago at 8 p.m. in Hulman Center.

ISU's chapter of State Dance Marathon is organizing the event as part of its "Miracle Week" activities. All money raised at Saturday's game will go to Riley's Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Saturday's activities will include testimonies from Riley's families and the opportunity to meet Riley's kids in attendance. Pregame events include opportunities to donate at the door, to purchase one of a limited 200 rally towels and a silent auction. Also, the first 500 people in attendance get a shirt from Indiana State's Athletics Department. In-game activities will include a video introducing Riley kids and families, and a "miracle minute" donation, during which members of State Dance Marathon will go into the stands to collect donations.

Fans are encouraged to wear black.

Activities are also planned at Thursday's 6 p.m. ISU women's basketball home game against Evansville.

—Barnes honored again — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods senior Cobie Barnes was chosen this week as the River States Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

Barnes' third RSC weekly honor comes on the heels of leading the Pomeroys to a pair of victories. Barnes delivered the game-winning play last Tuesday at IU Southeast, hitting a game-tying baseline jumper and drawing a foul with 2.7 seconds left. Barnes' free throw gave the Pomeroys a 79-78 victory over the Grenadiers.

Barnes scored 35 points in the victory, setting a new career-high and posting the second-best single-game performance in school history.

He followed that up with a 24-point performance to lead the Pomeroys to a 90-66 home victory vs. Midway on Saturday.

Barnes shot 51.1 percent from the field in the two wins, adding 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

"Cobie has been great for us all season and I don't see anything changing in the near future," coach Jesse McClung said. "He practices every day with immense intensity and toughness like he still has something to prove."

The Pomeroys (21-5 overall, 15-1 RSC) were back in action Tuesday night at home against Brescia.
