Round of golf with Charles Barkley sells for $100K at charity auction

Someone out there really, really wanted to play golf with Charles Barkley.

A round of golf with the NBA Hall-of-Famer sold for $100,000 after 41 bids through the All In Challenge on Wednesday night. The auction was set up by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin to combat food insecurity amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The package specifically includes 18 holes of golf with Barkley at a course in the Philadelphia area with two friends, as well as drinks, a meal and “premium” cigars.

Whoever dropped six figures on golf with Barkley is undoubtedly familiar with his infamous struggles on the course, but things seem to have gotten better over the years. Once known for a bizarrely large hitch in the middle of his downswing, some videos of a much smoother motion have emerged in recent years.

“Let me tell you something brother, I’ve been working on my game every single day,” Barkley said in the video announcing his entry.

Of course, the people bidding to play golf with Barkley aren’t really doing it for the competition. Barkley has become one of the highest profile personalities in the sport, and he has promised a good time to whoever wins.

“If they play golf with me, there’s going to be plenty of cigar smoke and there’s going to be plenty of beers drank,” Barkley said. “We’re going to have a great time and raise a lot of money for charity.”
