Rose men rout Defiance by 30; Rose women win by 37

Feb. 4—Sparked by Miles McGowen's 28 points and 11 rebounds, Rose-Hulman defeated Defiance 79-49 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon inside Hulbert Arena.

This improved the Engineers' records to 9-12 overall and 7-7 in the HCAC.

Other double-figure scorers for Rose were Kobe Stoudemire with 11 points and Bradley Harden with 10.

The Engineers will play host to Hanover at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hulbert Arena.

Women's basketball

—Rose-Hulman 80, Defiance 43 — At Hulbert Arena, Jamie Baum exploded for 31 points to help Rose-Hulman celebrate Senior Day with a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Defiance on Saturday.

Before the game, the Engineers honored their 2024 senior class, including Ashley Black, Peyton Miller, Mira Randolph, Manuella Shomba and Neha Vinesh.

Miller opened the contest with her first basket of the season after missing most of it with an ACL injury.

Shomba was the lone other Rose player in double figures as she recorded a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Rose-Hulman (11-10 overall, 8-6 HCAC) will visit Hanover on Wednesday.

College track

—Staggs breaks record — At South Bend, Will Staggs set an Indiana State record in the men's pole vault during the Meyo Invitational, pacing Indiana State's contingent in the two-day event inside the Loftus Sports Center on Saturday.

Staggs cleared 18 feet, 0 1/2 inch on his first attempt to break the program record, which he previously matched a week ago in the Michigan Invitational. ISU also picked up a first-place finish from the men's distance medley relay team of Ethan Breen, Tahj Johnson, Napoleon Hernandez and Jackson Krieg, which ranks inside the top 20 nationally.

A second straight split-squad weekend awaits the Sycamores, which will send athletes to the GVSU Big Meet, Marian Indoor Invitational and Tyson Invitational next weekend.

—Other Sycamores compete — Indiana State wrapped up its first split-squad weekend of the season Saturday, taking home first-place finishes on the men's and women's side in the Blue-White Classic inside the ISU Indoor Track and Field Facility.

The Sycamores took home first-place finishes in nine different events Saturday, with every event group picking up at least one victory. ISU had at least one top-three finish in all but two events it took part in.

As a team, Indiana State finished with 124 points on the men's side and 179.5 points on the women's side. The Sycamore women finished 94.5 points ahead of second-place Greenville, with the men finishing 48 points ahead of runner-up Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Women's swimming

—Engineers fall — At Lexington, Ky., Rose-Hulman lost to host Transylvania 160-129 Saturday.

Rose earned eight event wins for the day and five second-place finishes. Catherine Bath and Cate Stauffer paced the team with three individual victories each.

Rose-Hulman will host the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships Feb. 14-17 at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.

Men's swimming

—Engineers win — At Lexington, Ky., Rose-Hulman defeated host Transylvania 177-109.

The Engineers finished with 14 event wins to claim their sixth dual meet victory this season. Vineet Ranade was the standout for Rose-Hulman with three individual event wins in the 50-yard freestyle (22.02), 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.58) and the 200-yard IM (2:02.72). He also was part of the first-place 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard free relay teams.

Rose's Evan Sellers, Tommaso Calviello and Caleb Munger also finished with multiple event wins. Parker Siddons represented the Engineers in diving, placing first in the 1-meter diving (219.97 points) and 3-meter events (218.25).
