Rockers sign Walding

Feb. 18—HIGH POINT — The High Point Rockers have signed former major leaguer Mitch Walding for the upcoming season, the team announced Wednesday.

He spent parts of the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies before joining the Toronto Blue Jays prior to the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Walding, a third baseman from Stockton, California, was a fifth-round draft pick by the Phillies in 2011. He hit 81 career home runs and posted a .240 batting average over eight seasons that included stops in Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, and Double-A Reading, Pennsylvania.

Walding got his first Major League hit, a two-run homer, on Sept. 14, 2018, against the Miami Marlins.

The Rockers, who were 74-66 in their first season in 2019, are set to play when the Atlantic League season opens May 28.
